BELLE PLAIN - State Senate candidate Dennis Mathahs, running to represent Iowa’s 38th Senate district, officially received the Democratic nomination at a special nominating convention held last month in Belle Plaine. Members of the Benton, Iowa, and Poweshiek County Democratic Parties unanimously selected Mathahs as their nominee.

“I am pleased to officially be the Democratic nominee for State Senate. The nominating convention was a great opportunity for Democrats from across the district to come together, and we are now prepared to work towards victory in November.”

Dennis is an attorney in Marengo and an Iowa native, having been born in Marshalltown and raised in Manly by his adopted parents. His parents were both civic leaders; his father served as Chief of Police, and his mother was an entrepreneur and City Councilor. Dennis worked his way through college at North Iowa Area Community College and the University of Iowa, and he eventually earned his law degree from UI. He has owned his own law firm in Marengo since 2003, and has lived there with his wife Meleah, son Jake, and step-son Dylan.

Mathahs had previously been on the ballot for the Iowa State House District 75. However, with no Democrat running in Senate District 38, Dennis decided to endorse primary opponent Paula Denison and shift his campaign to the Senate. Mathahs wants voters in the area to have the opportunity to vote Democratic at every level, instead of letting incumbent Senator Tim Kapucian win by default.

“I am running for Senate to make sure our state moves into the future on the right track. I will fight for fully funded public education and affordable college. I will work to improve our state’s water quality. I will advocate for the mentally disabled, and I will push to raise the minimum wage. This election will determine the direction of our state and our country, and I hope to help make sure that direction is forward.”
