For months planning, seeking grants, and then accepting bids have all been happening at the county level for a new transportation building.

Ground was finally broken a few weeks ago and at the corner of 9th St. and F Ave. in Vinton, or better known as "behind the old West school" for those of us that grew up in Vinton.

The Benton County Transportation's new transit building sits just west of the Benton County Service Center and is scheduled to be completed by December 1st, 2020

"We received a PTIG Grant (Public Transit Infrastructure Grant) from the Iowa DOT for 80% of the cost. Their share is $318,000.00 Benton County will have the remaining 20% cost of the building. This grant was given to us by the IA DOT to get us out of the flood plain. We have endured two major floods that forced us to get completely out of our current building while still conducting business," said Dana Burmeister the Benton County Transportation Director.

The new building is 80 x 120 overall and will have office space in the southeast corner. The building will be set up as a drive-thru with angle parking for all of the buses and vans inside the facility along the north wall. The building will have room for office space as well as a wash and maintenance bay for the buses.

If you need a ride, you can find the information on the Benton County website here. Costs for rides can be seen here and much more information can be found at the tabs on top of the page.

The service is open to the public and is here to serve all of the Benton County residents.

You can follow Benton County Transportation on Facebook to find weather-related bus delays, school cancellations, or any news about what's going on with transit.

AW August 5, 2020, 12:38 pm I am extremely disappointed that as a homeowner on F Ave, I was never notified that such a large structure was being built in the green space by the school. None of the neighbors I spoke to even knew what was going on or what was being built. To say the least, it is not an improvement to our residential neighborhood!
