Like many communities in Benton County, Shellsburg was hard hit by the August 10th derecho. There have been many expenses for the city during storm recovery such as the trucking of tree and building debris, generator costs and staff overtime. Shellsburg will be eligible for federal and state disaster assistance, but if we can document contributions of volunteer time, it will increase our funding.

We've gathered documentation from residents concerning the time they spent clearing debris from their property or elsewhere in town. However, we know there were folks from rural Shellsburg and other communities who also came to help. We appreciated the assistance!!

If you helped clean up storm debris in the town of Shellsburg we're hoping you'll let us document that time. We can count the hours you worked and also account for any equipment you provided such as chain saws, skid loaders, trucks, etc.

We created a form to gather the information required by FEMA. It includes instructions and is available on the city's website, where you can download it, print and mail to Shellsburg City Hall at PO Box J, Shellsburg, IA 52332. Or you could scan and email to the city clerk at CityofShellsburg@Shellsburg.com.

Please consider taking a few minutes to think back and report any hours you spent working in the town of Shellsburg. If you have any questions, please call City Hall at 436-2954. Your time and cooperation in reporting your volunteer work will really be appreciated!!

The City of Shellsburg Needs Your Help

There have been many expenses for the city during storm recovery such as the trucking of tree and building debris, generator costs and staff overtime. The city will be eligible for state disaster assistance, but if we can show your contribution of volunteer time, it will increase our funding. And that's where we need your help!!

We are asking residents to report the dates and approximate hours you worked clearing tree and building debris from your own property or any other property in the town of Shellsburg. If you provided equipment such as chain saws, skid loaders, trucks, etc., please record this also.

Shellsburg citizens have worked hard, so please provide information that we can use to capture this opportunity and lessen the cost burden to the City. (You won't be paid for your hours.) Please look back in your memory or any logs that you kept and give us your best estimate.
