Liz Mathis officially filed petition paperwork with Iowa's Secretary of State's Office today to run as the Democratic challenger in Iowa's newly redrawn 2nd Congressional District.

"Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers in every county across the district, we have collected double what was required and worked to secure more than a thousand signatures for statewide and statehouse candidates up and down the ballot," said Liz Mathis. "I was welcomed warmly at doors all across the 22-county district and am proud to have accomplished this with entirely volunteer support."

A Mathis campaign internal poll, conducted February 2-3 by Public Policy Polling, showed Mathis with 42% of support to Hinson's 43% with a 3.9% margin of error. Fifteen percent of voters were undecided. Last month, nonpartisan election forecaster FiveThirtyEight gave the poll an "A-minus" and the Cook Political Report upgraded Iowa's 2nd Congressional race toward Mathis.

"Iowans want an independent voice in Washington who puts the needs of Iowans ahead of party politics and reflects Iowa values of truth and fairness," said Liz Mathis. "People are fed up with my opponent telling Iowans she supports policies that are good for Iowans, but then voting against these policies in D.C."

The Iowa Secretary of State's office reports there are 185,578 Democrats, 169,366 Republicans and 199,290 No Party voters in the newly redrawn 2nd district.
