Correction:

See comment below on my math! :)

---

A quick google of the political breakdown in Benton County politics indicate that the politcal scorecard indicates that the Republican party holds a strong 60% of Republican voters compared to 30% Democrat leaning voters, and the other 10% are registered Independent.

This year the primaries reflect that. There will be two contested races on the primaries ballot this year.

Benton County Board of Supervisors

In the most contested race, the Benton County Supervisor seat held by Tracy Seeman. There are two challengers for the seat. For the second time in as many years, another woman is competing against the status quo. The first and last time a woman won this position was 54 years ago, in 1972. She served from 1973 until 1980.

Candidates:

Tim Bird, (R)

Bethany Hantz (R)

Tracy Seeman (R)

Benton County Treasurer

The Benton County Treasurer's Office will also see a bit of competition between sitting Treasurer Melinda Schottmer and Second Deputy Treasurer Joy Wieditz. Both have served the county for just about the same length of time.

Treasurer

Melinda Schoettmer (R)

Joy Wieditz (R)

Benton County Recorder

Lexa Speidel will remain unopposed on the Republican side of the ticket for the Recorder's Office position on the ballot. In November, she will face a Democratic contender. Basically, this is an uncontested primary race for the primaries, one vote for either will put them on the ballot in November.

Recorder

Lexa Speidel (R)

Allison Hicks (D)

Benton County Attorney

Ray Lough will also be running unopposed in the primary on the Republican ticket.

How do Primaries work?

The primaries on June 2, 2026 are for the purpose of selecting the candidates who will appear on the November ballot. When you vote in June, you are narrowing the field for your party's candidate.

Are you registered to vote?

Residents should register to vote before May 18, 2026. If you are not registered, you can still vote on election day, but you will need to show your ID and bring two other forms of proof of residency, like your utility bills, bank statements, etc.

RS March 25, 2026, 5:42 pm I took the data from our state government data.iowa.gov not google and I used active voters vs. inactive and currently counted on March 1, 2026. Don't know whether that makes the difference. It is difficult to recruit Democratic candidates when the county is so conservative and red. But with Trump and Reynolds making our country and state so messed up, the tide might be turning.
GS March 25, 2026, 3:16 pm Googling the numbers I got different numbers than either the author or the comments. Either way, only one democrat threw their hat in the ring. 7/8 of the candidates are of Republican leanings. Either the democrats didn't care, or didn't think they could compete and win.
But TDS is still rampant.
RS March 25, 2026, 12:51 pm According to data.iowa.gov, Benton County has 15,757 active voters as of March 2026.
Republicans have 6723 voters or 43%
Democrats have 3058 voters or 19.4%
No partys have 5864 voters or 37%
Others is less than 1%

What is with Republicans and percentages? Don't follow the example of your leader. As the most intelligent person in the world, supposed graduate of Wharton Business, as by his telling the most successful businessman, Trump does not know the basics around percentages. He thinks that drug prices can be reduced 1,000, 500, 600 percent but does not realize that at 100% reduction the drugs are at zero. At 1,000%, or anything over 100%, the government would owe us money. Simple stuff but comes from a simple man.

Editor's note: You are right! After I did my draft article, I realized that I didn't figure in the independents...and then forgot to correct that...I just subtracted the Democrat voters...my bad! Thanks for the catch!
