Kapucian and Pettengill to Host a Provider Managed Care Meeting
State Senator Tim Kapucian of Keystone and State Representative Dawn Pettengill of Mt. Auburn will host a managed care meeting for health providers of House District 75 on November 12th in Van Horne. This is an opportunity for health care providers to meet their state lawmakers, ask questions, offer suggestions and tell them of their experiences.

Holiday traditions and travel or the flu may keep regular donors from giving blood this month, but the need for the lifesaving liquid does not let up. To ensure hospital patients can live on to celebrate many more holidays, every blood type must be on the shelf at all times.
VPRD accepting registrations for Fall Aqua Aerobics
The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department continues to accept registrations for our upcoming Fall Aqua Aerobics session held Wednesday and Sunday evenings at the Iowa Braille School's indoor pool. Class times are from 5:30-6:30 PM on October 25, November 1, 8 and 15 in addition to class times from 6:30-7:30 PM on October 28, November 4, 11 and 18.

Binge Drinking and Breast Cancer: Know the health risks
Simply said, heavy or binge drinking can increase your risk of breast cancer. What is binge drinking? For women, binge drinking is consuming four or more drinks in a sitting, with a drink described as a 12 ounce beer, 4-5 ounce glass of wine, or 1.25 ounces of liquor.
With October being breast cancer awareness month, it seems a great time to point out that heavy drinking can impact women negatively.
Taking Charge: VS, Benton students discuss substance abuse prevention
The Area Substance Abuse Council’s annual Take Charge conference was held this year on September 29th at the Kirkwood Training and Outreach Center. ASAC Prevention Staff from Linn, Benton, and Jones County took the day to train over 130 high school students from Linn, Benton, and Jones Counties. Virginia Gay Hospital and the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department are teaming up to host the 2nd Annual Benton County Community Health & Wellness Fair on Saturday, October 17th at the Vinton Skate & Activity Center. This fair will focus on health, wellness and safety topics that are of local interest.
This year we are offering local farmers and producers the opportunity to showcase and sell their products in a Farmers Market environment outside in the parking lot during the fair.
October is 2nd Annual Substance Abuse Prevention Month
October marks the second annual National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, an initiative first started via White House proclamation last year. This serves as both a humbling reminder of the toll substance abuse has on our families and communities, as well as a celebration of what accomplishments have already taken place. It’s a month for reflection, a month for action, and ultimately a month for optimism.

The Vinton Red Cross Blood Drive is this Thursday, September 17, at the Vinton Skate Center from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. All donors will have a chance to win a $10 Visa card.
