COVID hits local nursing home
With 5 cases of COVID in Benton County nursing homes, fortunately, they have been contained to just one location, the Vinton Lutheran Home.Across the state, Iowa nursing homes have been hit hard with the cases hitting 821 cases including residents and staff. Iowa Department of Public Health says that this week (January 21) there were 63 nursing homes in Iowa hit with COVID, roughly 15% of all of the nursing homes in Iowa.
Attorney General Tom Miller provided an update on the opioid epidemic in Iowa
The AG’s office has worked to address the opioid crisis in the state for the past five years, challenging and suing manufacturers and distributors. The office has focused on prevention, including the over-prescription of opioids that caused this crisis, and treatment, specifically on MAT or Medication for Addiction Treatment.

Vinton Community Red Cross Blood Drive January 20th
The Vinton Community Red Cross Blood Drive will be held on Thursday, January 20, at the Vinton Skate Center from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. Appointments can be made by going online at redcrossblood.org or calling Kristie at (319) 472-4292. Blood supplies are critically low at this time, so please consider giving your gift of life.

COVID-19 vaccine clinic canceled for tonight January 14
Due to inclement weather conditions and for the safety of our community, we are cancelling tonight’s COVID19 Vaccine Clinic from 5:30pm-9:00pm. Stay well and safe everyone. Thank you, Benton County Public Health.

Our hospitals are quickly filling up again with COVID-19 patients and with those suffering from other illnesses and injuries. Our ability to transfer critical patients to higher-level facilities is becoming extremely difficult and is very concerning. Our employees are tired and overwhelmed. Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics joins our area rural hospital partners in asking our communities for help.
PRZ (Peer Recovery Zone) January Schedule
The PRZ Zone meets at 811 D Ave in Vinton on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Feel free to come and go or stay the whole day! Bring a snack or drink, must be 18 years or older.Peer Support Centers help to create a safe, caring and inclusive space where adults can connect with others who share similar life experiences.
