National Wear Red Day is a day when Americans nationwide wear red to show their support for women's heart disease awareness.

When you hear the term “heart disease,” you may think, “That’s a man’s disease” or “Not my problem.” But here is The Heart Truth®: one in four women in the United States dies of heart disease, while one in 30 dies of breast cancer. If you’ve got a heart, heart disease could be your problem.

National Wear Red Day® promotes the Red Dress℠ symbol and provides an opportunity for everyone to unite in The Heart Truth's life-saving awareness-to-action movement by putting on a favorite red dress, red shirt, or red tie.

-1 in 3 women still die each year
-1,100 women are still dying every day
-Only 25% of women have increased their physical activity
-44% of women do not know that heart disease is their No. 1 killer

About The Heart Truth
Awareness that heart disease is the #1 killer of women has nearly doubled in the last 12 years. However, most women fail to make the connection between heart disease risk factors and their personal risk of developing the disease. The Heart Truth is a national program for women about heart disease and is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Through the program, launched in 2002, the NHLBI leads the nation in a landmark heart health awareness-to-action movement that is being embraced by millions who share the common goal of better heart health for all women.

February is National Hearth Month and Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics is celebrating by showcasing the Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab Department on Friday, February 14th (10am-2pm) open house. Current and former patients, interested community members are encouraged to visit.
