As school approaches some parents may be wondering or perhaps even worrying about what kind of “crowd” their kid will gravitate to and what will there kid be “into?” We as parents work hard to instill values and skills that we hope will help our kids be successful, but have we adequately prepared them?
When it comes to substance abuse prevention, there are values and skills that can increase resilience, which can decrease the likelihood that a kid will choose to use drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or vaporizers. These same values and skills may decrease the likelihood of other risky behaviors as well. Many of these values and skills will be useful throughout their lives, but are especially important during the teenage years.
Parents can help build strong communication skills by encouraging and allowing their kid to practice being assertive at home by talking through some social situations so that they are more prepared, and even plan through some difficult situations. Substance abuse related discussions may include talking about some of the drugs they may be offered, how to handle some situations where drugs or alcohol may be present, how to keep themselves safe, and recognizing how substance use can negatively impact their future. Though it is hard, we must try to not lecture our kids as they will likely “check out” of the conversation. Instead, talk openly, answer questions, problem-solve, and most definitely role model daily what you hope to see from your kids.
Kids will also experience an array of emotions throughout the teenage years, and should know healthy options that they may use to cope with feelings and manage stress. Encouraging a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise and good nutrition can help with managing feelings and stress, but may also assist in improved self-esteem.
Additionally, having a healthy level of pride in their school, community, family, culture, and themselves may also help in maintaining a high level of self-esteem. By supporting youth participation in positive activities and praising accomplishments we will continue to build a strong self-image.
School is the place where most socialization takes place for kids and there are several positive opportunities. That being said, there is also the potential for trouble that may have a lasting impact on their future. By teaching and encouraging kids to set goals, they are reminded of their own value and that they have control over their own life.
There are many things we cannot control, but if we adequately prepare our kids, most will make good choices. Parents should be involved in their kids’ lives and maintain a strong partnership with schools. We as parents are tasked with the job to prepare our kids for the world, with the likelihood that they will in turn have a positive impact on others. Please remember that parents are the number one influence on whether their kids choose to use substances or engage in other risky behaviors.
