Virginia Gay Hospital (VGH) recently welcomed Shakespear, a Crisis Response K9 trained through Crisis Canines of the Midlands, to support hospital staff during a trauma debriefing following a challenging patient event.

The visit was coordinated by VGH Trauma Coordinator Lisa Rule, who requested a K9 response to provide comfort and emotional support to staff during and after the debriefing process.

“Trauma debriefings allow staff to express emotions such as grief, frustration, and even feelings of failure, while also recognizing the meaningful, positive aspects of the care they provide,” Rule explained. “Many of us at VGH are animal lovers, and Crisis Response K9s are specifically trained to be supportive companions. This trauma was particularly difficult, and it was important to me that our staff felt supported. Recognizing and utilizing resources like Crisis Response K9s is an important part of my role.”

Shakespear, accompanied by his handler John, provided comfort, companionship, and a calming presence to staff as they processed the event. “He was a wonderful guest, and we enjoyed having John with him as well,” Rule added.

VGH extends its appreciation to Crisis Canines of the Midlands and the Independence Fire Department for making this support possible. VGH plans to continue utilizing Crisis Response K9 services as an additional resource for staff wellness.
