Gyms offer a safe and effective place to exercise and stay active. Before signing up for a member-ship, take a few things into consideration.
First make a list of what you want from a facility. When choosing a gym, consider questions such as, “Do you need childcare or youth services?” “Are you going to use the pool?” “Do the hours fit within your schedule?” If you don’t plan to use the pool or take classes, try to find a gym without them; otherwise you will pay for them in your membership dues.
Be sure to take a tour, ask questions, and note if there is a free trial period. During a trial period, you can try out equipment, take some classes, observe the friendliness and helpfulness of staff, and monitor cleanliness and maintenance of the facility. Also, ask people you trust about the gym they use.
Once you’ve found a gym you like, make sure the membership fee fits your budget. Also, be sure to read and understand your contract, including any hidden fees. Finally, check with your employer or your health insurance company because many offer a reduced rate at specific gyms.
