Death of 87 year old ruled a suicide

On Saturday December 30th, 2023, at approximately 10:28 p.m. Benton County Sheriff Deputies, along with the Iowa State Patrol, responded to a call at 2484 63rd Street, Vinton. Upon their arrival they found 87 year old Harvey W. Weiss suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Virginia Gay Hospital and subsequently transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital where he died the next day.

This society has since been called P.E.O. This philanthropic and educational organization is comprised of women whose aim is to help women reach their potential through educational opportunities. To do so, the 5500 chapters in the United States alone, has awarded over $416 million dollars to women through grants, awards, scholarships, loans, leadership development.

Vinton Unlimited announces Grand Prize Winner

Vinton Unlimited announced the Grand Prize winner of their Holiday Lights Punch Card drawing. For the 2023 holiday shopping season, the Grand Prize winner is Andrew Noe! The punch card with Andrew’s name on it was drawn from a total of 9,749 punch cards! The 2023 Holiday Lights Punch Card Grand Prize is valued at almost $1,400! The Grand Prize contained many items, a few of those items are tools, artwork, home décor, and many, many gift cards and certificates! (Photos to be released on Thursday.

Benton County Community Foundation to Award Over $290,000 in Grants

 What: The Benton County Community Foundation is holding their 2023 grant awards celebration.  Why: The Benton County Community Foundation will be awarding over $290,000 in grants to nonprofits and government entities in the areas of arts and culture, community betterment, education and youth development, environment and animal welfare, health and human service.

Shooting Saturday morning results in one fatality and one hospitalized

On Saturday, December 30, 2023, at about 10:24 PM, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting that a 59-year-old female had been shot and was being transported to a local hospital by private vehicle.Deputies responded to a rural residence about 2 miles south of Vinton in Benton County. Deputies would locate an 89-year-old male at the residence, who also had been shot.

Angel Tree wrapped up the season bringing gifts to 332 area children

It's another year in the books for the Angel Tree program. The small contingent of elves behind Angel Tree was able to assist our Benton County area children.LaNette Parker has been in charge of making sure that area children have had a merry Christmas for the last quarter of a century. Looking back on stories about the Angel Tree program, the number of children who benefit from the program have continued to grow each year.
