VSHS teacher Fleming among those honored by Governor Branstad

VS teacher Louise Fleming was among the Iowa Teacher of the Year nominees. Louise Fleming and other outstanding Iowa teachers received recognition from Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad on Tuesday.  Last fall, Fleming was named one of the finalists for Teacher of the Year. That honor ultimately went to long-time Fairfield English teacher Scott Slechta. Now an instructional coach for the district's new program, Fleming spent several years teaching Agriculture.

McTeacher Night: VSMS students, teachers gather at McDonald's

Connor Cain, who will turn 1 next week, closely examines Ronald McDonald Tuesday in Vinton. Clarissa Carolan had a memorable 13th birthday on Tuesday, as Ronald McDonald led a restaurant full of people in singing "Happy Birthday" to the VS Middle School student. Clarissa was one of many VSMS students and teachers to visit the restaurant on "McTeacher Night," when the restaurant celebrated its renovation by holding a fund-raiser for the school.

Construction Kids: Area youngsters learn basics from VPRD class sessions

Matt Boggess and others help teach construction skills to youngsters in a new VPRD program. The Vinton Parks and Rec Department has a full roster for its first Construction Kids program, but plans more sessions in the fall. The students have made tool boxes and began working on window birdhouses on Tuesday evening. McDowell's helped sponsor the event, providing materials and tools, and several parent volunteers helped the VPRD staff.

Mark Zahradnik seeks supervisor seat; two Democrats in House D75 race

The husband of a Belle Plaine lawyer who has been at the center of a Benton County controversy is now running for county supervisor. Mark Zahradnik, whose wife Jennifer recently filed suit against the county in the land use change involving Dean Brown’s Red Shed Auto Repair business, has filed papers for the District 3 Supervisor seat now held by Don Frese.

4-H News: North Eden wins volleyball tournament

Many members participated in the sewing workshop. Volleyball Champions! The North Eden Willing Workers’ intermediate volleyball team won their age-group championship at the Benton County Volleyball Tournament on March 20th. Caroline Lang, Morgan Lang, Kate Hyland, Samantha Walton, Anna Becker, and Lydia Radeke triumphed over Harrison Willing Workers in the championship match. The NEWW junior team, composed of Ashlie Meyer, Sydney Walton, Sophia Kreutner, Breanna Happel, McKenna Kingsbury, and Rachel Rollinger, also performed well.

VSHS speech students do well in Individual contest

All-State Speech: Celia Turner, Lindsey Miller, Grace Horst, Lily Horst & Caleb Kruckenberg. The State Individual Speech Contest was Saturday, March 12th at North Scott HS. We had 23 events perform. They received 16 I’s and 7 II’s. We had many amazing performances! VS Ag students learn about veterinary chiropractics

Veterinarian Christine Woodford visited the Vinton-Shellsburg Ag classrooms today to demonstrate animal chiropractics. She discussed how she uses chiropractic and acupuncture to treat both dogs and horses.  See Dr. Woodford's web site HERE. See the video HERE.

Area racer looking for match for second kidney transplant

Chris Luloff, with girlfriend Jess Ender, awaits his second kidney transplant. For years, Chris Luloff of Independence has been competing with drivers on eastern Iowa dirt tracks, including the Benton County Speedway in Vinton.  During most of those years, Luloff has been facing another lifelong opponent: Kidney disease.  Diagnosed at age 1 with Alport Syndrome, Luloff has battled kidney problems throughout his life.

VFD serves more tha 600 at Fish Fry

Hayden Henkle was one of many VFD children to help at the Fish Fry on Friday. Vinton Fire Department volunteers counted 660 people who came in for the fish fry on Friday. Many families lined up for fish and fries cooked by firefighters and volunteers, and desserts made by firefighters' wives -- although several children enjoyed their desserts first.  The event helped to raise money to cover the cost of a water rescue boat and a grain rescue tube, both of which were on display during the event.
