ISU student from Urbana killed by hit-and-run driver in Ames
The Ames Police Department is investigating a hit and run accident resulting in the death of a pedestrian at Lincoln Way and Ash Avenue. At approximately 7:04 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, an Iowa State University police officer found an injured pedestrian lying in the road at the above location. Officers performed CPR on the pedestrian until emergency medical personnel arrived.
SMILE DRIVE/Operation Backpack Seeking Donations
We are happy to announce our first ever SMILE DRIVE for Operation BackPack. Help a child in need this holiday season by donating TOOTHBRUSHES and full size tubes of TOOTHPASTE! Donations will be given to 110 K-5 students currently participating in our program here at Vinton-Shellsburg.
So, the next time you are in Fareway, LaGrange's, or Clingman's be sure to buy an extra toothbrush and/or tube of toothpaste! Donations can be placed in our BLUE Smile Drive boxes at the locations listed below.
Wreaths Across America: Many honor veterans at Mount Auburn Cemetery
At the top of the pyramid of cannonballs near the top of the hill at Mount Auburn Cemetery, a wreath will remain for the next several weeks.
That wreath was placed in honor of Commander David W. Wood, a Naval officer who was buried at sea in 2013. He had enlisted in the Navy in 1972 and retired as a Commander in 1997, after 25 years.

Last week, the Vinton-Shellsburg School Board received news that its members – along with countless school board members, administrators and teachers had been hoping to hear for years: The “No Child Left Behind” law will end at the end of this current school year.

Gold Coin: Donor puts valuable donation in Salvation Army Red Kettle in Vinton
Almost every year, some anonymous donor drops a coin into a red kettle as a Salvation Army volunteer rings bell to announce the annual Christmas donation drive. Then when officials open the kettle, they discover a very valuable gold coin.
Vinton was the first location to report the donation of a gold coin. It happened at Fareway on Thursday.

Vinton employee seatbelt rule: City may be forced to fire first-time offenders
A driver in Vinton was caught not using his seatbelt this month, and the citation could prove very costly.
That driver did not get a ticket, but his employer – the City of Vinton – may face repercussions for his action.
During Thursday’s council meeting, City Administrator Chris Ward shared a letter from the Iowa Municipalities Workers’ Compensation Association, the group which provides the required Workers Compensation insurance that covers city employees.
Christmas labor of love: Vinton woman donates many handmade items
Marjorie Rouse recently loaded up a minivan to ride with her daughter, Margaret Shontz, to deliver gifts that Marjorie had been working on all year.
"We loaded up the 102 quilts, afghans, and baby blankets she has made and headed to Camp Courageous in Monticello to give them the quilts and afghans," says Shontz. "The 23 baby blankets will be given to the Salvation Army.
Wreaths Across America: 96 veterans to be honored at Mount Auburn Cemetery
The second annual Wreaths Across America at Mount Auburn will take place at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 12) at the Mount Auburn Cemetery.
Ruth Coots Intlekofer, the area native who organizes the event and will help lead tomorrow's ceremony, says all 96 veterans in the cemeterry will have a wreath placed in their honor.
"The wreaths have arrived and the fragrance of that fresh balsam is indescribable," she says.
VPRD seeking volunteers to help plan 25th annual Party in the Park
While we continue to enjoy these abnormally mild December temperatures, the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department already has its sights set on summer of 2016 and our greatly anticipated 25th Anniversary of the annual Party in the Park community festival!
Our ongoing goal is to keep Party in the Park as fresh, exciting and innovative as possible so we are very interested in hearing what your thoughts might be!
