2016 Scholarships: Families of VSHS seniors encouraged to apply

VSHS staff met with members the senior class this afternoon to introduce the Local Scholarship program.  Each student was provided with a booklet explaining how to access the program and apply for local scholarships.  The link to this site can be found under "Student Links/Senior Links" on the HS website: http://www.vscsd.

State Champs!!!!! Stein wins individual championship; Vikes take team title

Viking bowlers celebrated with their coaches at Berry's Lanes after winning state title in DM. Nick Stein’s previous two-game total in high school bowling competitions was 461 – enough to barely win the championship in Monday’s individual bowling in the Class 1A State meet. But Stein, a Vinton-Shellsburg senior, didn’t bowl a 461 at State. Instead, he improved his own personal best by 52 pins, ending his high school career by rolling a 246/267/513 to take the individual title and lead the Viking bowlers to the team championship.

VSHS choir robe fund-raising continues; nearly half of goal reached

The V-S FACC fund drive for high school choir robes is going well, with $8,735 donated. The goal is $18,214.00. With three weeks to go, we are encouraged that this goal will be met. The V-S FACC wants to thank all the persons and businesses who have given gifts to the fund drive already. All who donate will be recognized at the end of the fund drive.

The NEWW Strikers: Anna Becker, Tess Lillibridge, Sammie Lundvall, and Sophia Kreutner North Eden Willing Workers bowlers won county recognition at the Benton County Bowling Tournament February 7th. Junior member Anna Becker was High Scoring Junior Girl with 260 pins; Jonathon Kreutner hit 287 pins and was the High Scoring Senior Boy. The NEWW Smashers team of Maren Redlinger, Jenna Pattee, Jordon Pattee, and Jonathon Kreutner were the High Scoring Intermediate Team with a total of 740 pins.

VSHS speech students succeed at State; 1-act play selected for All-State

All-State One Act Play: Celia Turner, Abby Scheel, Lindsey Miller, Alex Dick & Kyle Jorgensen. On Saturday, Feb. 6, 10 groups of Vinton-Shellsburg High School speech students performed at State Speech at Kennedy High School. Seven groups earned I ratings and three groups earned II’s. The groups earning I’s were Choral Reading, Readers Theatre, One Act Play, Short Film, Radio Broadcasting, a Musical Theatre and a Group Improv.

VSHS debate teams do well at State

These VSHS Debate Team performers did well at the recent State event. The Vinton-Shellsburg 2016 Debate Team performed exceptionally well at the Iowa High School Speech Association’s State Debate Tournament held on the DMACC Campus in Ankeny on Saturday January 8th and 9th.  Each team debated five times over the weekend on the topic Resolved: On balance, economic sanctions are reducing the threat Russia poses to Western interests.

School Report Card: How VS buildings measure up in latest evaluation

Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School was among the schools that earned "Exceptional" ratings in the Iowa School Report Card from the Iowa Department of Education. The ratings are based on the following educational measures: Proficiency: The percentage of students scoring proficient or better on reading and mathematics assessments.

Dr. David Sheff's journey to Vinton and Virginia Gay

Dr. David Sheff Dr. David Sheff’s path to Vinton and Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics has been a winding one. He’s among a rare group of people simultaneously earning joint Ph.D. and MD degrees at the University of Iowa; his Ph.D. was in biochemistry. His career has included a research fellowship at Yale University, years as a researcher winning grants for basic research from sources like the National Institutes of Health, and launching a company to commercialize discoveries.

Cookie Time! Local Girl Scouts, Daisies offering variety of favorites

Mallory Staggs and Elizabeth Hamer are among Daisies and Girl Scouts selling cookies. When you visit area stores, including Fareway and Theisen's, you may see members of area Girl Scout troops sitting behind tables full of boxed cookies.  Troop 5478 Daisies in Vinton are among the girls selling cookies as fund-raisers for their troop. Mallery Staggs and Elizabeth Hamer were among the girls selling cookies last weekend at Fareway.

Vinton cyclist's video leads to new bill regarding passing bicycles

The case of a Benton County driver who passed near a bicycle in a no passing zone last year which was dismissed by a magistrate has helped inspire the introduction of a new bill in the Iowa Legislature. State Senator Bill Dotzler, a Democrat from Waterloo, has introduced SF 2076, called “Change Lanes to Pass Bicycles.” As its name implies, it requires vehicle drivers who pass bicycles to use the opposite lane of traffic, or an adjacent lane, as they do when passing other cars.
