Breast Cancer Survivors receive donations

Alan Merchant presents the Survivors a check for $1,080 raised from his pink ribbon lawn paintings. Many area residents participated in fund-raising activities throughout October, the traditional Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At this week's meeting of the Benton Count Breast Cancer Survivors, three donations were accepted. Alan Merchant presented a check for $1080; he painted many pink ribbons on local lawns to support the group.  The ladies also receive a donation from Nature's Corner "Bling a Bra" event.

Alyssa Bunge, Davia Herger selected for Honor Choir event in South Dakota

Congrats to our Alyssa Bunge (Vinton-Shellsburg HS) and Davia Herger (VSMS) on being accepted into the High School Mixed and Middle School Girls Conference Honor Choirs for the North Central Division of the American Choral Director's Association. The North Central division is made up of six states; Alyssa is one of only 44 HS sopranos and Davia on of 60 Altos accepted based on their audio recorded audition.

Iwo Jima silhouette to be at Veterans Park by Veterans Day

Soon this Iwo Jima silhouette, created at Ideal Industries, will be on display at Veterans Park. One of the final steps in the creation of the Iwo Jima monument took place Monday evening at Ideal Industries, where the paint crew applied the black powder coating to the silhouette that honors the 1945 flag raising on Mount Suribachi during the battle for the island known as Iwo Jima. The work began several weeks ago, when, after a couple days of programming the plasma cutter, workers pushed the buttons that started the process of cutting the shape from a 300-pound sheet of steel.

Friends of 4-H sponsored Free Skate

Friends of 4-H sponsored a time of free skating, at the Vinton Skate Center, for any 4-H member who wore a 4-H t-shirt on Sunday afternoon.  The North Eden Willing Workers had 20 members in attendance. They skated and had a great time.  It was a well-attended event. 

New VSHS leadership class offers tributes to local heroes

Leadership Class: VSHS students honored those who impacted their lives. A new leadership class at Vinton-Shellsburg High School is helping students to learn a variety of leadership and communication skills and techniques. One of the lessons is recognizing the impact that the leadership of others has one each of us.  To reinforce this lesson, teachers Joe Johnson and Heather Kalous gave their class members a unique challenge: Write an essay/letter to a local hero, then read it to them at a special event in front of the class.

Mom's Movement: Photo session may lead to more opportunities to help women

Mom Movement: Photos illustrate varying experiences, parenting philosophies. A few days ago, several women who have different views of parenting and motherhood gathered at the historic Vinton Depot for a photo shoot. Each photo, taken by Kendra Spencer and Jamie Stander of Kendra Lee Photography, included two women who had different experiences, philosophies, or approaches to parenting. “It was an amazing opportunity,” said Kendra “Orchestrating and bring a part of something that is so much more significant than we realize.

Tree Walk includes variety of styles, themes, colors, including 'Frozen'

Jackie and Richard Bear created the 'Frozen' themed tree for the 2015 VGH Tree Walk. One of the favorite trees -- especially for children -- among the 2015 edition of the Virginia Gay Hospital Tree Walk is the "Frozen" themed tree. The white tree with blue trim and ribbon includes decorations from the famous animated movie. The winning bidder will also receive a bag full of movie-related items, a board game and dolls representing Anna, Elsa and Olaf, the sisters and snowman characters from the movie.

To Benton County residents,   The fall season is coming to an end, which means that deer will be on the move during the rut.  Please drive safely and look for deer, especially at dusk and dawn. Also, if you’re mentoring youth hunters this season. Remember to discuss the reason for harvesting your own meat, and what it means to you as an experienced hunter.

National Convention: National Chapter Award, American Degrees for VSHS FFA

On October 28th, 2015, fifteen Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter members and six chaperones loaded up three vans at 5:00 am to leave for Louisville, Kentucky where the 88th National FFA Convention was held. On the way to Kentucky the members made a small detour so that they could go to Fair Oaks Dairy Adventure in Indiana. The tour was around 4 hours and gave the members the time to experience the one of the largest dairy farms as well as seeing what modern pig farming involves.

VSHS teacher Fleming a finalist for Iowa Teacher of the Year

Louise Fleming, the former Ag teacher and currently a high school instructional coach and co-FFA advisor, was named one of the four Iowa Teacher of the Year finalists.
