Playing for a Cure: Bingo players, sponsors help fight breast cancer

Playing for a Cure: Many youngsters played Bingo with parents on Sunday. Among bras as table decorations and cookies decorated with pink ribbons, nearly 100 Bingo players and volunteers gathered at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School lunch room Sunday afternoon for the first Play for a Cure Bingo event.  Organized by Stephanie Gibbs, with assistance of the staff of Ehlingher's Vinton Express in honor of a colleague recently diagnosed, the event raised money for the Virginia Gay Hospital Gifts of Hope Fund, which helps pay for women's health services for those who cannot afford them.

Suspect jailed for truck theft; 'under investigation' as murder probe continues

David Miller: Arrested for vehicle theft, probation violation as murder probe continues. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen truck approximately 4:00 am Sunday October 25, 2015 from a residence on 59th street trail north of Shellsburg.  Reporting party advised they observed a white male take the vehicle and head south. The vehicle was subsequently located about 1 ½ miles south of where it was taken on a closed road that is currently under construction.

'Worst of the Worst:' Federal charges for accused shooter of Vinton woman's dad

As Police Officer Daniel Webster remains in an Albuquerque hospital with no change -- unconscious but stable -- the man who authorities say shot him during a traffic stop will face federal firearms charges along with whatever state charges he faces for shooting Webster last Wednesday.  Webster, the father of three Iowa women, including Rebecca Ingham of Vinton, is an 8-year veteran of the APD and a retired Army Paratrooper.

Tubular markers removed from 'Urbana 5' intersection; project schedule unchanged

Small holes indicate where the now-removed tubes guided traffic at 150 intersection near Urbana. Area residents who have driven at the intersection of Highway 150 and 55th Street near Urbana have noticed that the tubes which served as lane guides for those stopping as they approach Highway 150 from the east have been removed.   Iowa State Rep. Dawn Pettengill passed on the following explanation from the Iowa Department of Transportation:   "The Iowa 150 tubular markers that were installed were intended as a temporary measure to “train” drivers of the new pavement marking.

VSHS Post Prom Committee needs 6 ushers for Oct. 31 Hawkeye game

The Vinton-Shellburg Post Prom fund-raising campaign continues throughout the Iowa Hawkeye football season.  Up to 15 VS representatives can serve as volunteer ushers for Iowa football games, and the Post-Prom Committee receives a donation for each volunteer. The effort has aready raised at least a few thousand dollars toward the annual Post-Prom event.

Iowa DCI Investigating Homicide near Shellsburg

A press release this morning from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation confirms that the woman whose body was found on 59th Street Trail  on Sunday was murdered. Officers have not released the name of the victim, or issued any information yet on the suspect or any arrests, although they have said the incident poses no public safety concerns for area resident.

APD officer's prognosis 'unknown;' Iowa daughters with him in NM

Albuquerque police officer Daniel Scott Webster -- known as Daniel to most people but as Scott to his family and long-time friends -- continues to recover from multiple bullet wounds sustained on Wednesday night.  Webster, the father of three daughters who now live in Iowa, including Rebecca Ingham of Vinton, remains in the hospital, stable, but unconcious and in critical condition.

Vinton city forum: Council, mayoral candidates discuss variety of local issues

The Vinton city candidate forum took place Tuesday, with nearly 90 people filling the U.S. Bank Community Room to hear the 2-hour discussion.  The candidates all agreed that a "Yes" vote on the Vinton telecom utility is an important first step in offering more Internet options to Vinton residents. They also agreed that the city's web site is in need of a drastic improvement.
