City elections: Maynard to challenge Mayor Watson; two contested council seats

The deadline for candidates to file for city elections has passed, and for the first time in several years, Vinton voters will have three contested elections to help determine the future of city government. Former council member Bud Maynard will challenge John Watson in the mayoral election. Former VU director Nathan Hesson will run against District 4 incumbent Chris Bendull.

Three lots for sale: Council meeting to include land auction

These three lots will be offered for sale by auction during Thursday's Vinton council meeting. The Vinton City Council plans offer for sale three empty lots on the western edge of town to the highest bidder. The minimum bid for the three lots is $2,000 each; the buyer must agree to build a house on the lots within one year. Located on Q Avenue west of Highway 218 and south of First Street, the lots are just north of the storm shelter that offers protection to residents of the nearby trailer park.

VS FFA members share goals with school board

School Board Meeting             On Monday, September 14th, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter representatives spoke at the school board meeting, to present the Program Of Activities for the year.             The Program Of Activities (POA) holds everything relating to the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter.

Farm Safety Day: VS FFA members help in variety of ways

              On September 19th, 2015 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter helped out with Farm Safety Day, held at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Farm Safety Day, an event that has been going on for 20 years, is all about teaching children the right way to act while on a farm, around equipment that can cause serious damage if those around it aren’t careful.

'Text 2 Protect' allows anyone to report a crime anonymously

In the last couple of months we have implemented with the County Sherriff Department a new program called Text 2 Protect.  If you see something that is NOT an emergency, (underage drinking, drug activity, vandalis, etc.) you can now text a tip to the Benton County Sheriff's Department. Simply text CRIMES  (274637) Start your message with the word BENTON.

Vinton MOPS Group Meeting Weekly-New Moms Welcome!

MOPS is meeting again this school year.  If you are a mom and have a child age 0 through 5th grade please join us, we'd love to have you!    We are meeting EVERY WEDNESDAY from 5:30-7:00 at Blessed Hope Chruch (located behind Theisen's), and we are open to all moms of any denomination.   At each meeting we provide dinner for moms and kids from 5:30-6:00.

Documentary 'Anonymous People' to be shown tonight at Tilford Auditorium

Reminder that tonight is the showing of the documentary Anonymous People.  It is a 55 minute movie being showed at the Tilford Auditorium at 7pm.  This is a great video that shows the truth of addiction and how people struggle with this every day.  This showing is for anyone that works with people with substance abuse issues, has someone they know struggling with addiction, has addition issues in their own life or want to understand better the struggle people have with substance addiction.

Cancer claims life of 'Radiator Rick;' friends set up fund-raising page

Friends have begun a fund-raising campaign to help the family of Rick Ricklefs, who died Sept. 20. Even though it's been more than seven years since the H & H Radiator Shop in Cedar Rapids was flooded out, forcing Rick Ricklefs to change jobs and become a mason, he was still known to many as Radiator Rick until his death from fast-spreading cancer yesterday (Sept. 20). Friends of Rick and his wife Kay have set up a Go Fund Me to help cover the families medical expenses.

Students hear from injured farmer, others at annual Safety Day

A bicycle sprocket and hot dogs demonstrate the dangers of unshielded machinery at Farm Safety Day. For 43 years, part of Richard Flickinger’s daily routine has been putting on his prosthetic right arm. On Saturday, Flickinger told several groups of children who attended the annual Farm Safety Day about the day he lost that arm, and nearly his life. “I was in a hurry, and when you get in a hurry, you can make mistakes,” he told his young audience.

Passing of the Jack O' Lantern: Kacena Pumpkin Farm to open Sunday

Izzy Birker was one of many children who helped pick pumpkins at Kacena Pumpkin Farm on Saturday. Deb Kacena put out a Facebook call for volunteers to help pick pumpkins and squash and help her and husband Kevin set up the Kacena Pumpkin Farm. Approximately 100 people answered the call, and spent many hours Saturday helping the couple. They gathered at the farm's store and outside display area on 55th Street (just past the curve on Highway 150, about five miles north of Vinton).
