Few voters go to polls for unchallenged school board races

All of the school board candidates for Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton Community and Belle Plaine were winners on Tuesday, as few voters made it to the polls to cast ballots in an election in which all the local races were uncontested.  In V-S, incumbents Kathy Van Steenhuyse and Brenda Bartz ran unopposed. Jason Hicok and Kyle Schminke also ran unopposed for seats vacated by Megan Rickels and Angela Hazen, who chose to not seek re-election.

$100 +2:Bethlehem Lutheran Church Celebrates by giving in August 2015‏

Therese Foth, Member of the Vinton Fine Arts Guild and George Bauer, Congregation Council Member On August 30, 2015, Bethlehem Lutheran Church presented a gift of $102.00 to the Vinton Guild of Fine Arts. The art guild has been extremely busy in 2015.. They created cut outs of the "Ears of Corn" that were used during Ragbrai on July 23rd,  when the riders rode through Vinton. Individuals were able to stick their heads through these cut outs of corn and get their pictures taken.

Wounded soldier from WWP to speak at Flaughless 5K

Wounded Warrior Jeremiah Pauley will speak at the Flaughless 5K race. The 4th Annual Flaughless 5K, a memorial event for U.S. Army soldier Dan Flaugh, is just over one month away and for the first time will have a representative from the Wounded Warrior Project -- who is one of America's wounded warriors -- speak at the event. Jeremiah Pauley comes from the blue collar town of Massillon, Ohio. He’s proud to have served his country for 11 years in the U.

Fire destroys Vinton home; cause undetermined

The family living in this house escaped but was left homeless after an overnight fire. Vinton Fire Chief Gary McKenna said authorities are still investigating a house fire at 508 10th Street in Vinton that took place overnight.  "The house is a total loss," said McKenna. Real estate records indicate that the house is owned by LC properties, LLC., the company is owned byLeslie and Cory McKibben. No injuries were reported; the family including two children escaped but was left homeless.

Firearms classes now offered free to law enforcement spouses

A course for Iowans to obtain or renew their Permit to Carry Weapons has been scheduled in the area.  The four hour course covers handgun safety, gun handling, carry options, situational awareness, interaction with law enforcement, use of force, and state and federal laws.  The course teaches students how to be safe and efficient with a firearm for personal protection.

Woman injured in Tuesday accident in 218 construction area

On Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at approximately 2 pm,  The Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a two vehicle accident with injuries at the north end of the construction zone on highway 218 and the Van Horne/Newhall Corner. A 2002 Dodge Caravan Van driven by Angela Jean Shelton age 35 of Center Junction was travelling southbound on 218 when she failed to observe stopped traffic at a construction zone.

Beautiful, but dangerous weather as heat, humidity continues

The sun set on Thursday over Vinton, ending one of the hottest days of the summer. While the clouds made for a lovely sunset on Thursday, the National Weather Service warned area residents to beware of the hot, humid conditions that were present during daytime hours. Most areas including Benton County were under a heat advistor Thursday afternoon. The hot and humid trend is expected to continue throughout the weekend. 

Gal of two hats: Andreesen at home with ISU band & at large construction sites

Claire Andreesen loves the two very unique and different hats she wears, and what each represents. ­While the old cliché mentions a person of “many hats,” Vinton native Claire Andreesen has just two. Both of the hats she wears are unique, and each represents part of her successful college career. Claire has just completed her first summer as a paid intern for one of the 10 biggest domestic building contractors in the U.

Boomtown beats expectations; all records broken in 2015

   It was another great year for the IPA and Boomtown, despite the rain on Friday.    After a quick summary meeting, your Boomtown committee was able to determine that records in all categories were broken this year!  More cars were parked in the fairgrounds and more people were seated in the stands.  More volunteers were present and more law enforcement aided with the traffic control.

Hawkeye football ushers: Sign-up continues for Post-Prom fund-raiser

"We are so close," says VS Post Prom Committee member Sarah Wagner, of the fund-raising effort between Post-Prom members and the Iowa Hawkeye football game security team at Whelan Security. The committee has made an agreement with Whelan Security, which provides ushers for each home Iowa football game.  If the Post-Prom Committee can find 15 volunteers for each of the seven home games, it will bring in $9,800; the committee's goal is $10,000.
