Vinton Lutheran Home drive-thru success continues

Gladys Folkmann demonstrates one of the sensory games on the computer bought with drive-thru funds. The Vinton Lutheran Home Drive-Thru has become one of the most popular lunch stops for local residents one day a week. More than 100 customers bought burgers and malts on Wednesday, as they have every week since the nursing home staff began offering the meals.  "Big shout out to the staff at the Vinton Lutheran Home today," wrote Vinton resident Matt Salger on his Facebook page yesterday.

Handgun safety training courses to be offered in Vinton

A course for Iowans to obtain or renew their Permit to Carry Weapons has been scheduled in the area.  The four hour course covers handgun safety, gun handling, carry options, situational awareness, interaction with law enforcement, use of force, and state and federal laws.  The course teaches students how to be safe and efficient with a firearm for personal protection.

Back to school warning: Drive with care on gravel

Two VSHS students have already lost control on the gravel in the first three days of school. After just three days of seeing students drive past her house on the gravel road north of Vinton-Shellsburg High School, Jessice Heggebo has already seen two of them go into the ditch. Ron and Jessica Heggebo live at the corner of 61st Street and 26th Avenue. about two miles southeast of the school. On Monday afternoon, one teen driver lost control and entered the ditch.

Horridge House now home to various genealogy records

The Horridge House will be open this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., longer if there is interest. Stop in to see the new library with over 800 books for research and more to come.  7,000 obituaries have been donated all in books by last name and over 1000 marriage, births, special birthday's etc.  There is also an updated digital site as part of the Library's website where you can view archives of Vinton newspapers from 1855-1983.

Fire destroys farm building

Firefighters battle a farm building blaze north of Brandon on Tuesday. Vinton, Brandon and Urbana-Polk firefighters responded to a farm building fire on 52nd Street near 25th Avenue this morning. Ben Geater watched as firefighters sprayed the metal building, which contained equipment and hay. The building was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Smoke was clearly visible from Vinton. 

Did you know...and trust me, this is STILL news to some!

Okay, I know that MOST of you are tired of hearing the mantra, "We are NOT a NEWSPAPER" and know that it means we are JUST here online.  Bear with us a minute. Over the last few months we've heard, "I wish they'd run more of your stories in the newspaper!" We still get a chuckle out of that, and think, "Ummm okay, perhaps it's time to again say something???" Now it's not YOUR fault that you associate Dean with that ancient form of news gathering called a newspaper, because granted, he's been in the news business for, yikes, almost a quarter of a century and most of those years were at a newspaper.

Join the VFW Auxiliary, it's not just for women

At this years VFW & VFW Ladies Auxiliary National Convention in July 2015 a vote was brought to the floor to change The Name of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. It was made into a motion and passed. So now eligible men & women can  join The VFW Auxiliary (not just women)   If you know someone that is Eligible for membership in The VFW: They have received a campaign medal for overseas; have served 30 consecutive or non consecutive days in Korea or any conflicts overseas; or have received hostile fire or imminent danger pay then you are eligible to join our VFW Auxiliary.

VSU ride a success again; organizers thank cyclists, donors and food providers

VSU Special Olympians and their families gather for a photo before the annual benefit ride. More than 100 people, including dozens of motorcyclists and a few driving or riding in cars or pickups, gathered in front of the Ron-Da-Voo in Vinton on Saturday morning for the annual Vinton-Shellsburg United Special Olympics teams. “Thank you to everyone who came out for the benefit ride yesterday and supported our team,” says Kris Kramer, mother of athlete Zach and one of the event’s organizers.

Murphy Memorial golf event raises another $11,000 for Gifts of Hope

Rick Murphy presents the check from the Murphy Memorial golf event to Mike Riege & Mike Timmermans. For the 16th consecutive year, Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics has been selected as one of the recipients of a very generation donation from the proceeds of the Murphy Memorial Golf Tournament. The Rick and Paula Murphy family and many of their friends have hosted this tournament since 2000 to raise money to help in the fight against cancer. Too many families have been impacted by cancer – some more than others – and the Murphys’ mission is to help as many families as they can until this battle is won.
