Veterans offer a rifle salute to those who died in WWII, during Saturday's 70th anniversary event. For Americans, August 1945 arrived with a mixture of elation and fear. American troops were among other Allied forces occupying France at the end of the war in Europe – which was also for much of Eastern Europe the beginning of the reign of the Iron Curtain as Soviet troops made it clear that the end of WWII was the beginning of the Cold War.

Buddy, Emily and Cassie: Vinton teen continues the story of a beloved horse

Cassie Kenney & Buddy - and the memory of his previous rider - inspired many at the State Fair. Many State Fair attendees who saw Cassie Kenney this week, riding or taking care of her horse Buddy, walked toward the pair with a glow of recognition and a smile on their faces. But it wasn’t the Vinton girl they recognized and remembered, but the horse – and the tragedy that took away Buddy’s first rider. Cassie and Buddy – a quarter horse whose registered name is Terms Look Radical – enjoyed a very successful summer.

Then on July 15th and 16th Brian Parr of Vinton used his creativity and a chain saw to sculpt a bear welcoming everyone to Bear Creek, the creek which flows through both of our city parks.

Did you know...that there are things we DON'T charge for?

Many times we have felt frustrated in other jobs because it just didn't seem right to charge people for services that we offered. One of those was running Obituaries. If you've ever lost a loved one, you know it can be so expensive to simply take care of the final expenses. We offer to run the obituary of your loved ones FREE. Most of the time you can drop a hundred dollar bill at a newspaper for the information to come out, MAYBE in time for the funeral.
