Shellsburg felon sentenced to nearly 4 years for firearm possession

            A four time felon who made threats by pointing a loaded shotgun at another and then discharging it in that person’s presence was sentenced today to just short of four years in federal prison.         Dennis Lee Kaplan, age 41, from Shellsburg, Iowa, received the prison term after a January 15, 2015, guilty plea to a single count Indictment charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Hospital donates to school supply drive

Molly Noren receives donation from Virginia Gay's Mike Timmermans Virginia Gay Hospital donated $500 to the community effort providing school supplies to children in need.  Virginia Gay’s donation was added to donations the Vinton Shellsburg School District has received from the churches represented by the Vinton Ministerial Association, Clickstop, and Monkeytown.  Mike Timmermans, Virginia Gay Hospital Foundation Director, and a current member of the Vinton Shellsburg Community School District's Board of Education, presented the check for $500 to Molly Noren.

Lil Racers honor Urbana 5 with race dedicated to Zoey Tuttle on her birthday

Urbana 5 honored: The Tuttle family is preparing box race cars for a special kids event Aug. 1 The Lil Racers Club held another one of its box car races Sunday at the Benton County Speedway. On Friday, July 31st at the home of Ron and Mia Phelps, and also on what would have been ZoeyTuttle's 13th birthday, her family gathered to celebrate her life. In the past few weeks, many area racing fans have been decorating cars. The Tuttles and their friends created racers honoring Zoey and the other members of the Urbana Five: Zoey's brothers Hunter Tuttle and Triston Randall, and Quentin Ary and Nikki Jacobsen.

Special Honor Flight: WWII airman rides in world's last flying B-29

A special flight took place Sunday, as a WWII airman rode again, in the world's last flying B-29. An emotional reunion took place on Sunday between a 70-year-old warplane and a 91-year-old World War II veteran who flew 29 missions on a similar plane until the summer of 1945, when he helped deliver care packages to Americans held in POW camps. Jerry Micka of Cedar Rapids, accompanied by three generations of descendants and escorted by his son, Mike, climbed the ladder into the gunner’s chair at the top of the middle of the B-29 Superfortress known as Fifi.

Parade of Champions honors top winners of 2015 Fair

Ellie Karr leads her champion dairy goat in the Parade of Champions. Family tradition: Fair Queen's mom once wore crown

Princess Sadie Anderson and Queen Sarah Kreutner Sarah Kreutner, the 2015 Fair Queen, is the second generation in her family to have earned that title. Sarah, the daughter of Brian and Jen (Peterson) Kreutner, was crowned Queen on Thursday, July 23. Her mom had been the Story County Fair Queen in 1989.   "So far, I’ve had a wonderful time as Queen," says Sarah. "I’ve gone to many shows I usually don’t see and loved them.

Eden Aid members gather for century celebration

100 years of Eden Aid: Members celebrated in Newhall Wednesday. One hundred years of Eden Township history filled the Newhall City Park pavilion on Wednesday, as the current and former members of Eden Aid and their family gathered to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the club. They discussed the history of the township, the schools they attended, 4-H clubs they joined and neighbors they remembered. The club formally organized in 1915.
