Family history: For many, classic cars are part of bond between generations

Sarah Kreunter's birthday gift allowed her to bring this '76 Lincoln to the Cruise. For many of the owners of the 350+ cars which filled Vinton for the annual Cruise on Saturday, the vehicles are a part of family history that is still in the making. “I got married in this car. I brought home all of my children from the hospital in this car,” said Larry Bearbower of Vinton. The car he was referring to is his still-original 1969 Dodge Coronet.

Vinton man hit, killed by car on Highway 30

A Vinton man whose car broke down on Highway 30 south of Newhall late Monday night was hit by a car and killed. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Michael Moore, 61, exited his vehicle which was parked on the shoulder of the westbound lanes. He walked into the roadway and was hit by a Chevy Malibu driven by 18-year-old Cody Bergom of Belle Plaine.

Lots to see at the 2015 Benton County Fair; ribbon auction set for Sunday

Do you support the youth of Benton County? Many people seem to think that the fair and 4-H/FFA are only for farm kids and if you don’t live on a farm, why would you go to the fair? Just like everything else in this world, times are changing. We are blessed to have a county that has very high 4-H participation. Along with the internet and the explosion of sites like Pinterest, 4-H has grown and it’s not just farm kids that are taking projects to the fair.

Fair Week begins with Communications Day, Queen judging

While most shows and competitions of the 2015 Benton County Fair do not start until Wednesday, two important events of the annual events took place recently.  A panel of three judges interviewed the nine Queen candidates and has elected the 2015 Queen and Princess. Those decisions will be announced during the traditional Thursday evening gathering in the grandstands.

Jacob Gosse competes in Junior Gold Bowling Championships

Jacob Gosse competed in the 2015 Junior Gold Championships in Chicago this past week. Each bowler had to qualify for the Jr Gold tournament by having the highest pin total at a local junior gold qualifier. 3120 Youth bowlers competed in three age different age groups: U12, U15, and U20. Hundreds fill downtown Vinton to see variety of unique and antique vehicles

Hundreds gathered downtown for the 31st Annual Vinton Cruise on Saturday. Despite the 90+ degree heat and extreme humidity, hundreds of area residents gathered downtown and lined the streets for the 31st Annual Vinton Cruise.  Organizers counted more than 300 entries before the cruise began at 7 p.m. See more photos HERE.

Mobile Food Pantry moves to new day, location; donors, volunteers needed

The Mobile Food Pantry, which has been serving dozens of families at the HACAP Center for the past year, is moving to a new day and location. The food distribution event will now take place the 4th Saturday of each month, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church. If you are in need of food assistance, please consider taking advantage of this opportunity.

Mackey pleads guilty to 1998 Indiana 'cold case' murder

Clint Mackey has pleaded guilty to the 1998 murder of Erika Case in Indiana. A former Vinton man who was arrested in January 2014 for a 1998 "cold case" murder in Terre Haute, Ind., has entered a plea agreement and will was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Monday.  Clint Mackey, 34, was 18 years old when Erika Case was stabbed to death in her home in September of 1998. Although he was a person of interest, investigators did not have enough evidence for an arrest until after the TNT series "Cold Justice" featured the case and helped cover the cost of some of the investigation.

VS FFA helps at Garrison Fun Day

On Saturday, June 11th, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA helped out at the Garrison Fun Day. This event took place from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Garrison Fire Station, with activities going on around and inside the station. Members of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter brought in animals, including two horses, 3 cows, 2 donkeys, and 7 rabbits for the children and other visitors of the Garrison Fun Day to pet.

VS FFA Officers learn team skills at annual Retreat

On June 29th, 2015 the 2015-2016 Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter Officer Team went on the annual FFA Officer Retreat at Clear Lake, Iowa. The retreat that was lead by Mrs. Fleming and Mrs. Heeren, the new ag teacher and FFA Co-Advisor, lasted for three days, with the members, advisors, and Scott Fleming leaving on Wednesday the 1st of July. The team started their day off at 9 am, when they left for Clear Lake.
