Lions hear update on Iowa National Guard

Vinton Lions saw this map showing where Iowa National Guard troops have served throughout the world. Although young recruits after 9/11 were told they were almost certain to be deployed overseas, recruiting for the Iowa National Guard remained strong as America sent thousands of troops to Iraq and Afghanistan, said Col. Greg Hapgood. Hapgood, the top public affairs officer for the Iowa National Guard, spoke to the Vinton Lions Club on Wednesday.

Cruise attendees have chance to help with VS school supply effort

The Vinton-Shellsburg community has "reputation of supporting our schools and helping our students," says Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock.  A special event on Saturday, during the Vinton Cruise, will allow residents another opportunity to help those in need. “Stuff The Bus” is a back-to-school special supply event which will happen on July 18.

Last year more than 200 children needed community assistance with supplies ranging from pencils to facial tissue. This year the Vinton Shellsburg Community School District is partnering with Clickstop Cares, Monkeytown’s Care Now program, and the Vinton Area Ministerial Association to make sure all children have the necessary supplies when they start school.

Mount Auburn volunteers needed Sunday through Thursday for RAGBRAI

RAGBRAI riders will see this view as they leave Mount Auburn for Vinton July 23. Mount Auburn residents are invited to help leaders there prepare for the RAGBRAI ride-through next Thursday, July 23. Below is the schedule: Sunday, July 19: Beautification Day. Anyone wishing to help will be meeting on Main St at 2 p.m. for weeding, painting, sweeping and cleaning up the streets. Monday July 20: Volunteers will be needed to haul supplies into the Legion-time TBA.

Shellsburg readying for 10000+ RAGBRAI riders; bridge birthday planned

Birthday Bridge: Free cake will help Shellsburg celebrate its 100th year during RAGBRAI ride. Like the citizens of dozens of other Iowa communities, Shellsburg residents are readying for the arrival of RAGBRAI riders next week. More than 10,000 cyclists plan to pedal from Vinton to Shellsburg as they complete Thursday's (Day 5) 70.9-mile journey from Cedar Falls to Hiawatha.  Entertainment scheduled for next Thursday, July 23, in Shellsburg includes music in Shellsburg Park by the band called Four Guys and a Gal, as well as Sparkles the Clown.

Vinton Night with the C.R. Kernels: Free tickets for Friday's game

The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department has FREE tickets still available for this Friday’s game with the Cedar Rapids Kernels for Vinton Night at the Ballpark.  Tickets are available to the general public.  We encourage any kids who were involved in the VPRD Little League, Tball or Blastball program to wear their team shirts to the game, but all kids are welcome.

Cars Are Deadly For Unattended Children and Pets

Temperature in cars rises fast. Each year 30 to 40 children die in parked cars from heat stroke.  Most of have been inadvertently left in the family car on hot day with the windows rolled-up.  But some enter an unparked car on their own to hide or play.  The reason young children are especially vulnerable is because they have low mass for their skin surface area compared to adults.

What should our challenge be this year? Who can find the largest piece of metal?  Who can find the most tires? What will the most unique piece of glass or trash be? Which boat will make the first trip to ‘offload’ their ‘less than precious cargo’?  These are only some of the challenges we make to each other at the time we take to the water for our clean up, and they are all fun challenges that produce real results.

Work begins on pavilion; group continues preparing historical river display

Concrete footings outline the shape of the structure that will soon house the river display. The concrete footings outline the shape of the pavilion that will soon house the Cedar River historical display at Celebration Park. Crews poured the concrete this week.  The informal group of volunteers and river enthusiasts continues to meet to share what the members have learned about the history of the river. Their goal is to create a metal relief map showing the names and locations of some of the river's places.
