RAGBRAI Route Inspection Pre-Ride to visit Vinton June 4

There really is only one good way to inspect the selected roads for a bike event … get out and ride it on bike! And that is exactly what we are going to do with a team of knowledgeable cyclists thoroughly examining every mile of the RAGBRAI route on bicycles. For the eleventh consecutive year the RAGBRAI Route Inspection Pre-Ride Team will ride the entire RAGBRAI route 50 days in advance of the event.

Rylie Pflughaupt, Alternate Iowa Dairy Princess, helps promote industry

Rylie Pflughaupt hands out cheese samples at Fareway; she is the Alternate Iowa Dairy Princess. Rylie Pflughaupt, the daughter of Jordan and Traci Pflughaupt, has been serving the Iowa dairy industry for the past year as the Alternate Iowa Dairy Princess . Riley grew up north of Vinton where her family milks 70 cows and grows sorghum, rye, and hay. She is a past Benton County Dairy Princess and past Iowa Jersey Princess. In August she was crowned as the Iowa Dairy Princess Alternate at the Iowa State Fair.

Drug probe: Officers execute search warrant at apartment in Vinton

On May 30, 2015, at approximately 6:40 a.m., officers from area law enforcement agencies served a search warrant at 1607 W. 1st Street, Apt. 1, in Vinton as part of an ongoing investigation into activities that include the alleged use and sale of illegal drugs. Six individuals ranging in age from 16 – 20 years of age who were inside the residence were briefly detained during the search warrant service.

Vinton-Shellsburg Honor Roll

Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School students were honored at an end of the trimester assembly for making the Honor roll.  Students must maintain a 3.5 to 4.0 GPA average to be on the “A” honor roll and 3.0 to 3.49 to be on the “B” honor roll.  Students in bold maintained a 4.

UPDATE: VINTON COMMUNITY SWIMMING POOL

After a solid quarter-century run, the Vinton Community Swimming Pool’s original circulation pump has met its end. But wait, there is good news! While the details on the purchase and installation of a new pump are squared away, we have been fortunate to obtain a temporary loaner pump that has gotten us back up and running. We've been filtering, chlorinating, and heating the water for the last 24 hours and are ready to REOPEN TODAY! Today's slightly modified hours are: General Swim: 2-5 PM, 7-8 PM Lap Swim: 5-6 PM Family Swim: 6-7 PM We will return to regular hours tomorrow.

Tilford students celebrate end of year with Silly String and concert

Students from 4M laugh as they cover Mr. Murray with Silly String during Wednesday's assembly. Tilford Elementary staff and students planned two celebrations on the last day of school on Wednesday. In the morning they gathered to present awards and to celebrate the success of their PTO Box Tops 4 Education program, which exceeded its $3,000 goal and earned well over $4,000 for school equipment and activities. The winning class 4M, with teacher Emily McLaughlin, won the right to cover Mr.

2016 VS Post-Prom Committee looking for chairperson

Although the 2014-15 school year has just ended, planning for the 2016 Post-Prom party is just beginning.  Parents of all VS juniors are invited to help with this event. A committee has been set up, but so far it does not yet have a chairperson.  Committee member Tammy Hepker sent this message to VS families this week: Attention 2015-2016 Vinton-Shellsburg JUNIOR Parents:   There will be a 2016 Post Prom parent planning meeting on Monday, June 1 at 7:00 @ Tilford.

Safe at Home: Local leaders discuss how to protect victims under new law

  [VIDEODuring the 2015 legislative session, Iowa became one of many states to enact a “Safe at Home” law for victims of domestic abuse, stalking and other crimes. The bill will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2016. Now, state and local leaders are discussing the best way to implement the program – making sure that domestic violence, sexual abuse stalking and human trafficking victims have a private mailing address for elections and other first-class mail.

A unique insect...

Entomologists call this insect the luna moth; it appears further north as summer arrives. Many people have seen the photo of the leaf-like insect and said, "What's that?" We had the same question.  The answer is: Luna Moth. Experts on the unique-looking moths say that  "Luna Moth sightings grow more northernly as summer approaches, and the moths move from the southern portion of the range in Texas and Florida in the early months of the year to the northern portion of the range in Maine and Canada by May and June as spring warmth moves to northern latitudes.

How Mr. Davis became a human ice cream sundae

Students react as the process of turning Mr. Davis into a human ice cream sundae begins. Shellsburg Elementary students competed for a unique prize in one of their contests this year. The class that brought in the most box tops for the Box Tops 4 Education fund-raising program earned the right to make Principal Ryan Davis a human ice cream sundae. The students in Mr. Josh Meyer's class received that prize today, covering the principal's head with ice cream, syrup, and other toppings.
