Friends of the Shelter shoe drive nears goal

Payton and Taylor Frank joined the students in 1V to celebrate the 186 pairs of shoes collected. On Monday, Friends of the Shelter members Peyton and Taylor Frank visited the 1V classroom of Tina Vasquez, where students presented them the 186 pairs of shoes they had collected.  The goal is 2,500 pairs of shoes by May 15; so far the project has reached 93 percent of that goal. Students learned that their efforts helped reach 7 percent of the goal.

Rand Paul brings 2016 presidential campaign to Iowa

Local residents and journalists gather around Rand Paul after his speech at the American Legion. The first 2016 presidential candidate to visit Vinton this year came on Saturday; Kentucky Senator Rand Paul spoke to an audience of nearly 100 local residents as several photographers from a variety of media outlets stood along the walls of the Post 57 Legion Hall.  Paul, the first Republican to officially announce his candidacy, spent much of his time discussing national security.

Shellsburg students hear story of Iowa soldier who fought for South in Civil War

Lucas Maynard wears the blue uniform of the North during a Civil War presentation in Shellsburg. Shellsburg Elementary students heard a unique historical presentation on Thursday, when a retired Cedar Rapids teacher told them of a Civil War veteran who had fought for the South before moving to Iowa. Barry Grove was a history teacher and administrator in the C.R. district before becoming a Civil War and Colonial history presenter. He now shares his lessons throughout eastern Iowa.

$100+2: Bethlehem Lutheran Church Celebrates by giving in April 2015

 Amanda Seiler, Troop Leader, Kaylee Cantrell, Daisy Girl Scout and George Bauer, CCM On April 26, 2015, Bethlehem Lutheran Church presented a gift of $102.00 to Daisy Girl Scout Troop#6422. Daisy Girl Scouts are for girls who are in Kindergarten or 1rst grade and is the initial step into Girl Scouting. These girls attend Troop Meetings and do everything that older scouts do.  They learn group dynamics and have a program where they do age oriented activities such as learning about family, the Girl Scout program, safety and similar topics.

Eastern Iowa Honor Flight returns from another successful trip

Roger Uthoff and Former Senator Bob Dole, 91, another of the WW II Veterans As the veterans arrived on their Eastern Iowa Honor Flight, they had a special treat at the WWII Memorial.  Senator Bob Dole was on hand to greet all the veterans entering the WWII Memorial. Senator Dole, a WWII Veteran himself, was instrumental in getting the WWII Memorial built.  Pictured with two of the Veterans is MSG Antonio Giuliano who sings the National Anthem for the Honor Flight at the WWII Memorial.

Palace viewers see unique movies from the beginning of the silent film era

Local theater enthusiasts saw this video, the first to show the crossing of the Brooklyn Bridge. Imagine seeing, for the very first time, an elephant on a movie screen – and not just one elephant, but a group of several trained elephants and their riders frolicking in the water and spraying the camera. Or imagine seeing, from hundreds of miles away, what it would be like to cross the Brooklyn Bridge at the turn of the 20th Century.

Old Creamery Nature Trail Accepted into Iowa's Living Roadways Trails Visioning

The Old Creamery Nature Trail, which connects the communities of Vinton, Garrison and Dysart, has been selected for participation in the 2015 Iowa’s Living Roadways Trails Visioning Program. The trail is one of four Iowa trails that will take part in the program during 2015. The other three trails are located in Spencer, Ottumwa and Muscatine.

Vikings, Vikettes to compete in Drake Relays

These runners will compete in the Drake Relays on Friday. Two Vinton-Shellsburg High School relay teams and one individual have qualified for the Drake Relays.  In the boys events, four Vikings will compete.  Jordan Womochil, Joel Barnes, Cole Garwood and Nick Hyland earned a spot in the 4 x 100 event. Barnes also qualified for the 100M dash. For the Vikettes, the 4 x 100 relay team consisting of Sydney Robertson, Dawne Schminke, LaDorshae Mull, Hannah Kalous also qualified for the Drake Relays.

VWC members share memories as club disbands

Members of the VWC gathered Wednesday for one final meeting. About 51 years ago, two women knocked on the door of Dorothy Albert to welcome her and her family to Vinton. That was the first Dorothy had ever heard of the Vinton Women’s Club. She joined the VWC shortly afterwards and became involved in many activities. In 1988, she was named the Woman of the Year, and among her gifts was a quilt made by Bev Fiebelkorn, who died three years ago this week.

Vinton Public Library needs your help to update their files

The Vinton Public Library is in the process of updating patron records.  We would like to  begin using email to notify people of overdue books and movies, reserved books that are waiting, and whatever other fun stuff we can think of.     However, all of that is hard to do when the email comes bouncing back because of an invalid address – email, or street.
