Photo shows Shellsburg bank robber in fake beard

This photo from security cameras shows the Wells Fargo Bank Robbery in Shellsburg Wednesday. The Benton County Sheriff's Department is investigating a Wednesday afternoon bank robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank in Shellsburg. Photos released on Thursday by the Iowa State Patrol show the suspect wearing a fake beard, which tellers described as purple in color. Benton County Sheriff Randy Forsyth said that at around 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, a white male with medium brown hair, approximately 5'5" tall and weighing 150-160 lbs.

How long can you last without Vinton Today?

Since we've started Vinton Today, we've pretty much lived and breathed this website. A few weeks ago, we took a little it of time for ourselves.  We started out fine. We packed up the car and took off, leaving the laptops at home and taking just our cell phones in case of emergency. We relaxed and looked across the car seat at each other and introduced ourselves again.

Farmers needed to nominate V-S school for Monsanto Rural Education grant

The Monsanto-funded "America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education Initiative" helps farmers positively impact their communities and support local school districts. The program gives farmers in selected counties in 40 states the opportunity to nominate a rural public school district to compete for grants to promote science and math education.

Lifelong dream: Long-time tour guide Inge Schminke swims with dolphin

Inge Schminke's recent Caribbean cruise included this swim with a dolphin. After decades of leading nearly 2,000 Americans on tours across her native Europe, Inge Schminke has finally had the opportunity to take a vacation on her own – a chance to be the tourist, not the tour guide. Her children paid for a February cruise, and daughter Heidi accompanied Inge from Puerto Rico to several Carribbean ports. “I’ve always wanted to go on a cruise,” says Inge, who is also involved in the music and choir of the Vinton Presbyterian Church.

Vinton Today turns 5 Years Old Today!

Is it awful to just say up front that I wasn't sure how long or IF Vinton Today would work? As we ventured into this crazy endeavor, we sat in the home of the Karrs, along with Don Eells, and Wesley McElwey and discussed what we were about to attempt. Being the optimist one in the bunch, Kurt assured us that he was sure this would work.

Reception to honor retiring VPD officer Mike Severtsgaard, Friday, March 13

VSHS Job/College Fair:'What to expect and how to prepare'

VSHS students gather around a Marine recruiter during the job fair on Tuesday. Vinton-Shellsburg High School students met a variety of representatives in many career fields on Tuesday during the annual Job and College Fair. Many local businesses sent personnel to explain what they do in their line of work. Military recruiters and college admission representatives also offered information. VS staff members presented information about preparing for college and applying for financial aid.

Kiwanis celebrate two milestones at annual pancake breakfast

Colby Walker was one of many children who enjoyed pancakes with the Kiwanis Club on Saturday. The Vinton Kiwanis members gathered at the Vinton Skate Center for their 55th annual pancake breakfast.  The event also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the international Kiwanis Club.  "There were over 700 people who enjoyed the pancake breakfast Saturday," said member Dave Gates, who shared history of the organization throughout the event.

Burger bar fund-raiser will help bring Freedom Rock to Benton County

A sign just to the west of the Shellsburg American Legion building announces that the grassy area is the future site of the Benton County Freedom Rock. The Freedom Rock is a painting project by Iowan Ray "Bubba" Sorenson II. There is one large rock that Sorenson repaints each year with a variety of patriotic and military thimes, along with smaller rocks in several counties in Iowa.

Prescription drug drop box a success, but syringes not accepted

More than 90 pounds of unused prescription drugs have been placed in the drop box at the Benton County Sheriff's Office.  The box, funded by the Benton County Above the Influence Coalition. With security features that prevent anyone from removing items from it, the box is located between the two entry doors of the sheriff's office.
