Operation ReLeaf: Benton County residents offered special deal on trees

Benton County Conservation, in cooperation with Alliant Energy and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry, are once again offering Operation ReLeaf to residents of Benton County. Alliant Energy's Operation ReLeaf program offers residential utility customers in Iowa the opportunity to purchase landscape trees at discount prices.

FOTSI marks 10th year; reviews progress in animal control policies

FOTSI is celebrating its ten-year anniversary this year.  The non-profit 501(c)3 organization was created to assist in rescuing and adopting animals placed in the Vinton-Benton County Animal Shelter.  After the number of animals placed in the shelter increased an average annual rate of 26 percent over the prior five-year period, FOTSI entered into a contract with the City of Vinton to manage the animal shelter in 2009.

AmeriCorps Class 21 members arrive in Vinton

NCCC members got their first look at the campus that will be their home for the next 9 months. From dozens of states, they came to Vinton, on Tuesday. They lined up and signed up, and many tried on coveralls and respirator masks for the very first time. A few of the The 200 or so members of the AmeriCorps NCCC Class 21 who arrived at the Iowa Braille School campus seemed curious or perhaps a bit concerned to learn that trying on a mask that protect workers from mold and other airborne contaminants were among the very first thing they did during their very first hour in Vinton.

V-S, Happy Time making arrangements to offer day care at Tilford

Sometime this year, a new partnership between the Vinton-Shellsburg School District and Happy Time Day Care will result in a new service – day care at Tilford Elementary. The partnership basically offers the same day care services that Happy Time provides, but does so in the school, so parents who go to work early in the morning will no longer have to worry about transporting children from the day care center to the school.

VS board approves early retirement for Frazier, Barron, Primmer and Harris

During Monday's school board meeting, the board accepted Early Retirement Requess from Rhonda Barron (1st grade teacher at Tilford), Pam Primmer (special education teacher at the MS), John Frazier (2nd grade teacher at Tilford), and Jim Harris (physical education at the Middle School).  The board thanked them for their 116 years of service to students and the district.

Eagles keep landing in area

Eagles now commonly appear in the Vinton area. Once a very rare sight when the bald eagle was an endangered species, the symbolic birds are now frequently seen in Iowa, especially during the winter months. Brendan Turner captured this sunset with his drone-mounted camera on Friday. Vinton area residents and Vinton Today readers have had the opportunity to see aspects of our community in a new photographic perspective, thanks to a camera mounted to a drone.  The drone belongs to Brendan Turner, whose business, Aerial Advantage, offers customers photo services using that drone. Brendan took this photo of a snowy sunset on Friday.
