Upah named director of BDG; to meet residents at meeting tonight

Emily Upah is the new BDG director; she will be visiting area communities over the coming months. The new director of the Benton Development Group will bring an intense enthusiasm and understanding of local economics to the area, said BDG Board President Marlyn Jorgensen. Emily Upah, a Keystone resident and Belle Plaine and U of Iowa graduate, will formally begin her new job in August. But already, said Jorgensen, she has been busy talking to local leaders about what makes Benton County work and how to make it even better.

VS FFA Officers Retreat includes camping, team-building exercises

On the 17th of July, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter officers, along with Mrs. Fleming, Scott Fleming, and Emily Cashman, went to Clear Lake, Iowa for some fun camping time. This camping trip was for the annual officer retreat, designed for officer bonding time. At officer retreat, the officers participated in multiple ice breakers, or team building activities, to learn how to rely on one another as well as bonding with each other.

Cargill donates $5K toward Red Cedar Chapter playground

Tom Stueck of Cargill hands Bill Keller a $5K check while Ikes Bob Birker & Rick Jeray break ground. During the July Board Meeting the board of the Red Cedar Chapter received some very good news. They had been awarded a $5,000 grant for a new playground. “We submitted our proposal to Cargill in April of this year. Ashlyn Christiansen is managing the project. She researched different options and submitted the application to Cargill after our April board meeting.

That was the prediction of Hazel Senft's doctor more than a century ago. Still as sharp as a tack, Helen has proven that doctor wrong a long time ago. Hazel celebrates her 103rd birthday today with family from Madison, Georgia and friends at Windsor Manor.

Operation Backpack: Two VHSH students leading effort to feed needy kids

While the school lunch program helps children from needy families to have healthy lunches during the school day, many of those families struggle on weekends to have enough to eat. To help fill in part of that gap, two Vinton-Shellsburg High School students are leading the effort to bring “Operation Backpack” to Vinton and Shellsburg.

Area youth describe projects which will represent Benton Co. at Iowa State Fair

Nicole Lowe welded flowers from old car hoods and created an 'all-seasons' clothing/photo display. Garrett Paustian’s barn quilt was so good that his grandfather wants him to make one just like for his barn. He spent about sixty hours creating its multi-colored star design, using the favorite colors of his mom, Mary. Kaylie Bahmann made a cage for her first rabbit, which will be named Ellie – a rabbit she now may have to wait until after the Iowa State Fair to obtain.
