VS Voyagers continue can drive

Through the summer there are many bbqs, family get-togethers and town celebrations. When clean up is done and you have many redeemable cans/bottles laying around, contact Head Voyager Dance Coach Melanie Davis and the Voyager Dance Team to take those off your hands. Contact Melanie at 319-521-6653 to make drop off/pick up arrangements.  The team will be attending camp at Iowa State in July, held by the Universal Dance Association.

1949 truck donated to historic collection in honor of Dell & Mona Hanson

Dell and Mona Hanson pose with the antique truck donated in their honor to an Iowa museum. A 1949 International KB-2 pickup is being donated to The Hemken Collection of Williams, Iowa in honor of its former owners, Dell and Mona Hanson of Vinton. Dell and Mona were the long time owners of Farmers Sales and Service in Vinton. While they sold and serviced many types of equipment their passion was the International. Farmers Sales and Service was a former International Dealership.

Central Iowa tour group visits Vinton's historical sites

Frank Kruse introduces Judge Van Zimmer, who shared the history of the courthouse. A tour group from the Ogden/Ames area spent the day in Vinton, where they met the local woman named after our state and learned about the history of the murals located around town as well as the one on display near the main entrance of the Benton County Courthouse. The group of more than 30 arrived by bus on Thursday morning. Their day included visiting with Brian and Jennifer Parr about their art and Brian’s chain saw carvings.

Preschool Scholarship Funding Available

Tama County. In order to qualify for scholarships, children will need to attend a contracted licensed center or preschool facility. To be eligible families must show proof of income and be at or below 200% of poverty. The funds are made available through the scholarship component of the Better Tomorrows Early Childhood Iowa Area. This funding is designed to assist families who may not otherwise be able to send their children to preschool.

Tilford student thanks teacher associate Osborn for 'saving my life'

Jacob Kisner thanked Tilford teacher associate Krista Osborn for saving him from drowning. Like other teachers and teachers associates, Krista Osborn receives a variety of thank-you notes from students as the school year ends. But this year, Mrs. Osborn received a letter she says she will treasure forever. “Thank you for saving my life,” wrote second-grader Jacob Kisner. Jacob was thanking Mrs. Osborn for diving – while fully dressed – into the deep end of the Vinton swimming pool to save him from drowning on May 29.

Honor Flights receive donation from area bikers

The Corner Bar & Grill in Blairstown hosted a motorcycle ride to  benefit Eastern Iowa Honor Flight $1100 was raised.

Party in the Park Medallion Hunt Clues 3-4

The first two Party in the Park Medallions were found last week. The clues for the next two were released this morning:    Medallion #3  Eye was at Coney Island on the corner of Jefferson and Beckett Street.   Medallion #4  More than 50 years ago you would have found Crome and other junk at this Siegel stop.

Kablooey! Children see unique science experiments at library

The Kablooey event included some popular experiments involving fire in a large water bottle. Area children (and several adults) learned some basic scientific explanations for the noises we hear during the presentation called "Kablooey" at the Vinton Public Library on Wednesday. The “Kablooey!” program is part of SCI’s Science @ Your Site outreach, which brings fun, engaging experiments to schools and libraries across Iowa.

Meet the artists: Steve Mineck's blown glass is State Fair winner

Steve Mineck's blown glass will be among the art displayed during the June 21 Art Festival. Steve Mineck, a native of Cedar Rapids, now residing in rural Vinton, Iowa, is among one of the newer glass blower artists in the state. He is one of nearly 30 artists preparing to display their work during the June 21 Festival at Celebration Park in Vinton Mineck's interest in blowing glass began many years ago after observing a glass blower at an art festival in Madison, Wisconsin.

Thanks to those who made Lions scrap metal drive a huge success!

Lions Club members helped collect more than 40 tons of scrap metal during their May event. A huge THANKS to everyone who contributed to the May 10 Vinton Lions Scrap Metal Fundraiser. This idea came from Lions in New Hampton. Iowa, and it was really a winner. Local businesses including Barnes Furniture, Nick’s TV and Appliances, and Michael and Dowd Furniture gave us their non-working appliance trade-in stockpiles and a great many area residents cleaned out their basements and garages to yield 22.
