FSB donates $1,000 to VFD in honor of Charles Yundt

Darlys Hulme of Farmers Savings Bank presents a $1,000 check to the VFD in honor of Charles Yundt. Farmers Savings Bank & Trust has made a $1,000 contribution to the Vinton Community Foundation in memory of Charles M. Yundt.  Charles Yundt served as a director of the bank for 30 years.  Helen Yundt knew of her husband’s love for the Vinton Fire Department and asked the VCF to donate the funds from FSB to the Vinton Fire Department in memory of Charles.

Quaker donates to help Eastern Iowa Honor Flights

Stretching the food dollars??? Eastern Iowa Honor Flight in  co-operation with Quaker Oats is offering a food bag for a $5 donation.  Booth will be set up during Party in the Park in Vinton on June 28.  Retail value of food is approx. 40-50 dollars. Farmers Market season begins in Vinton

Children (and adults, too) released helium-filled balloons, hoping theirs would be returned from the longest distance by whoever finds it. Adults (and children, too) browsed the selection of fresh garden produce and home-baked goods. The Schmidt Family Band -- known now as Strait Run -- performed classic rock songs near the tables and outdoor cooking equipment of the Merchant family.

Historic B-17 on display in area; tours, flights available to public

If you like American history, military history, airplanes, aviation history and/or tributes to American veterans, an event in Eastern Iowa this weekend offers something that will inspire you in all of these pursuits, and more.  The Aluminum Overcast, a B-17 bomber made at the end of World War Ii, is on display at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids.

Vinton Police Chief Tilson announces retirement from law enforcement

Vinton Police Chief Jeff Tilson has announced his intention to leave his position. On his Facebook page, Tilson posted this today: After spending my entire adult life in law enforcement, the last 24 years with the Vinton Police Department, the last 23 as Chief, I've submitted my resignation as Chief of Police of Vinton effective on Friday, August 1st.

VS Connections Center celebrates first year of helping young adults

The VS Connection Center teaches young adult basic living and employment skills. The end of the school year included a celebration of the completion of the first year of one of the newest programs the Vinton-Shellsburg district offers its special needs students: The Connection Center. This program helps special needs students who have recently graduated to find job experience and life-skills training in a school environment.
