VS alum Abigail Darland earns first place in ag conference event

Abigail Darland of Vinton, Iowa, was one of the 12 Dordt College agriculture students who participated in the 2014 National PAS (Post-Secondary Agriculture Student) Conference in St. Cloud, Minnesota, held March 12 to 15. Darland was a member of the Beef Specialist team that took 4th place. She also took 1st place in the individual event, Feeds and Animal Health Employment Interview.

Benton County participates in traffic enforcement project

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office as part of their grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau participated in the March 14th – 17th  2014 sTEP enforcement wave  The focus of this project is both public awareness and saturation patrol in an effort to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on Iowa roadways. Through increased awareness and enforcement activities Iowa fatalities for 2013 were at record lows.

VSMS Honor Roll listed

Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School students were honored at an end of the trimester assembly for making the Honor roll for the second trimester. Students must maintain a 3.5 to 4.0 GPA average to be on the “A” honor roll and 3.0 to 3.49 to be on the “B” honor roll.  The following students achieved the “A” honor roll: 8th Grade:  Matthew Andreesen, Natalie Boyer, Baylee Bruce, Olivia Cox, Meredith Glynn, Hannah Kalous, Jenna Lane, and Cole Tharp all achieved a 4.

Pink Night nets $600 for fight against breast cancer

Vikette basketball players presented the Pink Night check to Monica Stark on Monday. Late next January or early next February, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes will host their sixth annual Pink Night. This year's fifth annual event raised $600 for the VGH Gifts of Hope fund, which provides money for mammograms to patients who cannot afford the service. The Vikettes presented the check to VGH Imaging Services Director Monica Stark on Monday, with seniors Ashley McKenna, Bethany Stainbrook and Sara Jorgensen handing the check to Stark.

VGH clinic formally begins Reach Out and Read program

Books can help even the youngest children to develop intellectually; and how a child interacts with books is a very good way to asses how well he or she is developing.  That basic observation is the motivation for the Reach Out And Read (ROAR) program, which officially began yesterday at Virginia Gay Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Maggie Mangold told an audience of about 50 people that she interned at a hospital where the ROAR was a success, and she hopes to help many families in the Vinton area through the program.

'Cruisin' through the Decades:' VSMS singers perform old favorites

Remember the Macarena?  Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School sixth graders probably will, even though the famous song and dance were a craze in the mid-1990s, a few years before the member of the VS Class of 2020 were born.  The sixth graders performed a "flash mob" version of the famous dance from the 1990s during the "Cruisin' Through the Decades" concert Tuesday evening.

Fiber arts event brings many from all over Iowa

Yarn spinners displayed their techniques during Saturday's event. A fiber arts event united growers of sheep, alpaca and llamas from all over Iowa, as well as those who enjoy using the yarn made from those animals' wool. The event took place Saturday in the VSHS cafeteria. Organizer Sue Hart, owner of Sunrise Suris Alpaca Ranch north of Vinton, said one goal of the event is to continue this tradition by teaching young people about it.

Serious pig kissing event wraps up FFA Week

Reach out and Read: VGH plans unveiling of new book program Tuesday

Books await children at the VGH clinic exam rooms, part of the Reach out and Read program. On Tuesday, March 18, Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinic leaders will celebrate the beginning of a new program designed to help encourage reading.  The hospital has been working with the "Reach out and Read' program for the past few months, buying books for children of all ages. The VGH Foundation, along with local donors have made this program possible.

VSHS to host Wamac Art Fair in Vinton, April 16

Brittany Lovekin-Merrifield works on her 3D dragons in art class; the Wamac event is April 16. The Wamac West Art Fair returns to Vinton this year, as Vinton-Shellsburg High School artists will compete in several categories with the students from the other seven conference schools Local residents have an opportunity to view the students' work this year, because the event has returned to Vinton. The students will come on Wednesday, April 16, to the gym at the Iowa Braille School campus.
