Snow driving's no fun...

Maintainer driver Don Burkey shared his misfortunes of today on his Facebook page. The moderate snowfall caused some travel issues for drivers in the Vinton area today. A car ended up in the ditch across from Theisen's on Highway 218 in Vinton. Also, Benton County Secondary Roads Dept. driver Don Burkey posted a photo of his maintainer after it slid off a gravel road near Garrison. Burkey had been a long-time mechanic before beginning his driving duties last week.

'Ice' meth case leads to federal prison term for Benton County man

        A man who sold “ice” methamphetamine from his rural Benton County home was sentenced on January 30, 2014 to just under four years in federal prison.           Kenneth Gragg, 54, from Garrison, received the prison term after a December 2, 2013 guilty plea to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm as an unlawful drug user.

Tourism in Vinton, Iowa?

It is a privilege serving on the Vinton Unlimited Board and I am now entering my second year.  One of my passions has been to work on tourism for Vinton.  Some of you may be thinking right now, “Tourism? VS cousins among elite group of National Merit finalists

Second cousins and 2014 Vinton-Shellsburg High School classmates Luke Moen and Jacob Isbell recently learned that they have been named among the 15,000 National Merit Scholarship finalists. Of the 1.5 million top students across the nation who qualified for the program, Luke and Jacob are among the top 1 percent. Finalists are chosen based on academic record, skills, and accomplishments.

AmeriCorps NCCC welcomes new members, marks 20th year

On Thursday, young Americans from dozens of states saw Iowa for the first time as they entered the AmeriCorps NCCC program at the Iowa Braille and Sight-Saving School (IBSSS) campus.  The 181 new Vinton residents are part of NCCC Class XX. The federal program is marking its 20th year in 2014, and plans to mark the milestone with a variet of events and a special celebration on Sept.

Mangolds hope fund-raiser will help other families fighting rare nevus disease

Spot on: Fund-raiser honoring Reid Mangold will help the Nevus Organization fight this rare disease. For many of us, having a baby is an exciting part of life that only adds joy and wonder to our day. Four years ago, the Mangold family had the same experience along with another emotion: Concern. A little boy entered their lives in the usual way, but came with a very unusual birthmark. Reid was born with a giant congenital melanocytic nevus – a dark, pigmented birthmark that covered nearly half his body.

Soil & Water Commission to meet Feb. 19

The next regular meeting of the Benton Soil & Water Conservation District Commissioners is scheduled for Wednesday, February 19, 2014.  The Commissioners will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the District office in Vinton.  Items on the agenda include minutes from previous meetings, financial reports, conservation plans, federal and state cost share programs including new Benton/Tama Nutrient Reduction Demonstration Watershed Project, and other general business.

Burpee Challenge helps 121 stay in shape, benefits Palace project

Marcy Horst accepts the $1,710 check from Mark Erickson, Julie Lessig and Alexa Schirm. Late last year, Mark Erickson of Kettlebell Advantage and Julie Lessig and Alexa Schirm of Total Balance invited area residents to participate in the Burpee Challenge.  A total of 121 people participated, performing a total of 5,050 Burpees each. The donations from these individuals will help the Palace Theatre pay for renovations to the box office and updating of its computerized seating system.

Best ever for VSHS: Robot team earns ninth place

Raising the flag: The VSHS team's robot succeeds in the final part of the contest. Have you ever, while driving a remote controlled car, or playing a video game, wondered how the people who made that device did so? How do they allow the device in your hand to determine the direction of the machine you are trying to move? For the past few years, several Vinton-Shellsburg High School students have been learning the many of the answers to those questions through the First Tech Challenge.
