Tree of Lights - A Giving Tradition continues at VGH

Tree of Lights Generosity is the heart of our community. For generations families, friends, neighbors and businesses have continued a long tradition of giving to Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics. Celebrating our 21st year, the annual Tree of Lights fundraising campaign helps Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics, a not-for-profit organization, purchase crucial medical instruments to better serve our community.

Big bang theories: The pryo-science that guides the geniuses of Boomtown

Jerry Dixon offered a college-level chemical discussion to IPA members Saturday. To the fireworks fans who gather each August for Boomtown, the members of the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association may seem like guys who simply like to blow things up. But anyone who walked into the IPA meeting on Saturday afternoon in Chuck Yedlik's machine shed would understand just how scientific and complicated this hobby really is. IPA member Jerry Dixon led a class on the chemicals that he and others use to make fireworks.

Veterans, Scouts retire worn flags

Scouts and veterans retired unserviceable flags Friday evening. The American Legion Post 57 veterans, with the assistance of Troop 47 Scouts, performed a flag retirement ceremony Friday night outside the Legion Hall. Dozens of unserviceable flags were retired by burning. The Scouts and vets saluted the flag before Rex Shepherd explained the meaning of the flag, and that ceremony.  “A Flag may be a flimsy bit of printed gauze, or a beautiful banner of finest silk.

Virginia Gay Hospital employees celebrate with Halloween costumes, pumpkins

It looks like a gumball machine. It is, however, a pumpkin. Several pumpkins took on unique appearances for the annual Virginia Gay Hospital pumpkin decorating contest. The pumpkin were on display on tables in the VGH Nursing and Rehab Center as the employees paraded through with their costumes. The residents then voted for their favorites.&

Halloween at Tilford

Tilford Elementary students celebrated Halloween with costumes and parties in their classrooms, but first they visited the Vinton Lutheran Home, walking from the school to visit the residents there. 

Behavioral health: Area leaders discuss challenges, efforts to help families

Most of area youth are making “good healthy choices,” says Keiaffa Green. But, says the director of the Benton County Above the Influence Coalition, “There are pockets of those who don’t.” Green is seeking to help empower all youth in the county to be able to make the right choices, regardless of their circumstances.

VSHS choir member Jacob Bunge named to All-State Chorus for third time

Jacob Bunge, pictured here with his 2012 awards, has been named to All-State Chorus for 3rd time. For the third year in a row, the Iowa High School Music Association has chosen Vinton-Shellsburg High School choir member Jacob Bunge for the Iowa All-State Chorus. Jacob will spend the weekend of Nov. 21-23 in Ames, rehearsing performing with the best high school singers from across the state.  See a complete program HERE.

Applications now accepted for energy assistance funds

Alliant Energy is reminding customers that Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) agencies are now accepting applications for the upcoming heating season. The program provides dollars to moderate and low-income level households to help pay a portion of their winter heating bills. “Customers can apply for help before they get behind on their utility bill so it gives them more confidence as the winter continues,” said Tim Heinrich, director of customer support services, Alliant Energy.

VSHS PE classes name archery champs

Sam Carrillo 1st hour PE The Vinton-Shellsburg High School PE class members recently worked on their archery skills, and each class hour crowned an archery champion. This year's winners are Kyle Henkle, Caleb Svoboda, Sam Carrillo, Meranda Sanders and Jeremiah Janssen.
