Bikes, helmets offered at Garrison Health and Safety Circus, July 13

The first ever Children’s Health and Safety Circus that will be held in conjunction with Garrison’s Fun Day this Saturday, July 13 will have eight bicycles and 20 bicycle helmets to give away. The event will be held from 2 PM to 4 PM at the Garrison City Park and is open to all children. “This is all about preventing injuries to children and adult awareness of potential hazards to children,” said Amanda Henkle, President of the Garrison First Responders and one of the event organizers.

Party in the Park: Talent show includes many performances

Natalie Wade The Riverside's Got Talent event at Party in the Park included a variety of performances. Singers, dancers, a guitar rendition of the Star-Spangled banner and even rainfall during a sad song were part of the contest. Winners were Alissa Hendrix, who did a dance routine with hula hoops, and Aspen Auld, who sang and kept on singing after the rain made spectators scramble for umbrellas or shelter.

VSHS plans mandatory 1-to-1 computer roll-out nights for August

Vinton-Shellsburg High School is rolling out computers to all registered 9-12 students for our 1:1 Computer Initiative for the 2013-14 school year. On Monday, August 12, 6:00-8:30 p.m., students with last names beginning with A-L, and Tuesday, August 13, 6:00-8:30 p.m., students with last names beginning with M-Z will have the opportunity to receive a MacBook Air computer, accessories, and bag.

How Benton County Historical Society is changing after storms of 2011

Two years ago, the derecho windstorm that created havoc in Vinton and surrounding areas left behind many issues the Benton County Historical Society (BCHS) had to deal with. The Monroe #5 Country Schoolhouse west of Vinton was damaged beyond repair and had to be demolished, so the schoolhouse project had to be scrapped. The Ray House and Carriage House received significant damage as well as some damage at the Depot.

River R.A.T.S. plan clean-up day, Aug. 3

In just one short month, on Saturday, Aug. 3, the Cedar River R.A.T.S. will once again take to the water armed with gloves, buckets, bags and grit! This is a 100% volunteer based project…with supplies and services donated from our local supporters. We will provide all bags/gloves and buckets for each volunteer, and a shirt will be available for the first 65 volunteers that sign up and register.

Vinton's Bary -Y Pyros to display talents again tonight, in Dubuque

Chuck Yedlik and his staff at Bar-Y Pyros are busy again today, setting up another fireworks show. Just a few days after lighting up Riverside Park for the annual Party in the Park, Chuck and his crew are setting up for the 3rd of July Air Show and Fireworks Spectacular over the River in Dubuque.  The show will be televised at 9:30 p.

Minute to win it: VS basketball players compete

Chris Merchant, Max Griffith and Grant Sagan try to shake ping pong balls from a box. For one more time a few weeks before going their separate ways to college, the seniors of the Vinton-Shellsburg High School basketball team, which spent much of its undefeated season ranked No. 1, were together again, competing. But this time, Grant Sagan, Max Kearns, Max Griffith, Chris Merchant and Kelyn Rickels were opponents, competing against each other in the Minute to Win It event during Party in the Park.

Hesco flood barriers begin to come down

Crews have begun removing the Hesco flood barriers. Using a large metal bar and an end-loader, crews from VMEU and the City of Vinton have begun removing the Hesco flood barriers from around the fire station.  The barriers will remain outside for a short time to allow the moisture from the sand to dry. Virtually all of them can be reused for future flood events.  VMEU purchased the barriers with funds from FEMA as part of its flood mitigation plan.

Celebration Park exceeds budget; council debates using $100,000 from LOST funds

The Vinton City council has been asked to approve funds to help pay for Celebration Park. The Vinton City Council narrowly and tentatively approved spending up to $100,000 in local option sales tax funds to cover the higher-than anticipated costs of Celebration Park, but must take further action at its next meeting to make the approval official. Although fund-raising efforts have netted more than $280,000, the cost of the project is now estimated at $367,000.
