Farmers Savings Bank, William Talen donate $10K to Celebration Park

FSB President Darlys Hulme & CEO William C. Talen present a Celebration Park check to Jeff Peterson. The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department’s Celebration Park Project received another great donation from Farmers Savings Bank and CEO William C. Talen.  Their gift of $10,000 is going to help make this park a reality and shows once again the great community support that Farmers Savings Bank has given to the community and area for many years.

Street improvement: What Vinton plans for future projects

Usually, April 1 is the first day of construction season for street projects, but if you look around Vinton, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot going on. There is, however, a lot going on behind the scenes, and soon you will notice a lot happening around town. Here is an update on the projects about which you may have heard. More information can be obtained from Vinton City Hall at 472-4707 or attending a Vinton City Council meeting at Vinton City Hall, 110 West 3rd Street.

Growing smaller: VS School Board discusses current, future staffing changes

The Vinton-Shellsburg School board spent part of Monday’s meeting discussing the difficult topic of reducing staff as the district’s enrollment continues to decrease. “If we have fewer kids we have to have fewer teachers,” said Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock. The district’s enrollment has declined by 120 between 2010-11 and 2013-14.

Seats still available for Jazz Championship pep bus April 18

There are still a few seats left on the pep bus going to jazz champs.  This takes place next Thus, April 18, in Des Moines.   Our very own VSHS Jazz Band won our Districts in order to compete at State, beating the Independence Jazz band who has won Districts for the past several years. VSHS jazz band performs at 10:30 Thurs. morning.

4 in a row: VSHS Artists bring home another '3D Best of Show' award from WaMac

Stephanie Berry and Tiffany Auen shared 3D Best of Show honors at the 2013 WaMaC Art Fair. For the fourth year in a row, a Vinton-Shellsburg High School artist has brought home the "Best of Show" in 3D award from the WaMaC West Art Fair. This year, Stephanie Berry and Tiffany Auen share the award. Stephanie won first place in the Decorative Ceramics category, while Tiffany placed second in that category. Stephanie created a design called "Something's Fishy," showing a person with a red octopus covering her head.

No Leaf/Brush Pickup in Spring

  The City of Vinton picks up leaves every fall when residents put them out on the curb. Because of this service, residents may believe that the city also picks up the leaves and branches in the spring. This is not the case. Please take any branches, leaves, or bush trimmings to the City of Vinton brush dump, which is the second right turn going north from the Cedar River Bridge.

Missing cat in Vinton

This 10-year-old cat has been reported missing in Vinton. Rosa is a grey and white long hair cat w/green eyes, she is wearing a black collar with a bell and red rabies vaccination tag.
