April is national Call Before You Dig month
With spring weather here, Interstate Power and Light Company, an Alliant Energy company, is reminding customers about the importance of calling 811 before they start home improvements. Whether you’re landscaping, installing a fence, or building a deck, Alliant Energy urges you to “call before you dig.
IPA members begin spring events, meet at Bar-Y Ranch
Boomtown is four and a half months away, but the people who bring it to Vinton are beginning to prepare for the event.
Dozens of Iowa Pyrotechnic Association (IPA) members, including a couple who traveled 350 miles from their home in South Dakota, gathered at the Bar-Y Ranch northeast of Vinton, the guests of Chuck and Marilyn Yedlik. The Yedliks regularly host several IPA events each year; the next will take place Memorial Day weekend. Celebration Park receives another donation; park to be open by late summer
The Vinton Parks & Recreation is very pleased to have received another donation for the new Celebration Park. Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth reports that deputies answered 259 calls for service and investigated 17 accidents. Deputies attempted to serve 203 civil papers and issued 47 traffic citations and 85 traffic warnings.
There were 50 arrests/juvenile referrals with 59 charges being filed in March 2013.
(32) were simple misdemeanors, (19) were indictable misdemeanors, and (7) were felony charges, and (1) civil violation.
FFA labor auction sets new record: $14,625
A higher number than usual (42) Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members and a group of generous farm operators and business leaders combined to make the 2013 FFA Labor Auction the chapter's best ever.
By the time all 43 auctions (including the finale for Mrs. Louise Fleming, now in her third year at VS) had concluded, the event tallied a total of $14,625. Grant Wood Elementary students raise $1823 for Honor Flight
Grant Wood Elelmentary students had fundraisers and worked dilligently to raise money for Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. Tricia Weber's 4th grade class led the charge. Their original goal was to raise $550 and they exceeded that goal to bring in $1823.

A tour of Benton County parks for the Benton County Board of Supervisors & Conservation Board will take place this Saturday, Aug. 6, beginning at the Nature Center, 5718 20th Avenue Drive northwest of Vinton (just west of Rodgers Park)

A year with PH: Trudy Seidel recalls a journey that began on Easter 2012
This Easter was a sad and difficult milestone for Trudy Seidel, as she realized she has been dealing with her PH diagnosis for a year already.
“I've cried a lot today," Trudy said last week as she prepared for Easter with her family. “I don't know if it’s the memories coming back because of my first year anniversary of my PH diagnosis. Aquascience: VS FFA continues learning to raise fish, vegetables together
With tonight’s labor auction, their annual banquet May 4, and their annual plant sales on May 11 and 18, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA has been particularly busy with after-hours projects even as they continue to work on the science of growing fish and vegetables in the same system.
The class has developed its hydroponics/aquiscience system this year and has harvested both Tilapia and lettuce.
