The Benton County Conservation Department is now hosting a traveling snake display that is sponsored by the Iowa Association of Naturalists. Many area students have already visited the Nature Center to see the display -- and to get up close and personal with an exceptionally friendly fox snake. Several brave first-grade students allowed the snake to wrap itself around them or even slither through their sleeves.

VU Mini-Masters under way

Bill Ervin said the course involving a truck and a toy has challenged several golfers. The weather can, in fact, put a damper on your golf game -- even if you play inside. Some of the people who set up courses for the VU Miini-Masters golf event say the low turn-out on Thursday was probably the result of the cold rain that fell much of the day. Golfers, however, have dry weather for today and no rain in the Saturday forecast.

Preserving the lower Cedar River area

Matt Fisher stands in a lower wetlands area. In the wide valleys where the Cedar River joins the Iowa River on its way to the Mississippi, lies a unique complex of wetlands, prairies, woodlands, and backwaters that together form a treasure of natural diversity. Here in Muscatine and Louisa Counties you’ll find the rare massasauga rattlesnake and Blanding’s turtle, along with 70 per cent of Iowa’s other reptile and amphibian species.
