Fountain to replace VGH Tree of Lights destroyed by 2011 storm

A fountain will replace the evergreen outside the VGH entrance; a storm destroyed the tree in '11. The large evergreen tree used for the annual Tree of Lights ceremony was destroyed by the storm of July 11, 2011. The tree planted to replace it had already begun to experience crowding issues, and has been moved. After pondering other options, Virginia Gay Hospital leaders decided to install a new fountain in the area where the large evergreen once stood, just outside the main entrance.

Vandals damage several Vinton vehicles with spray paint

Two trucks were defaced in similar fashion; several vehicles were reported vandalized. Two pickup trucks -- different year, make and model, but similar in color and both parked facing south on avenues on the east side of Vinton -- were defaced by spray paint in similar fashion sometime Thursday evening or Friday morning.  Nazi Swastikas in white and red were painted on those two pickups; several other vehicles were also reportedly vandalized in similar fashion.

Benton County Celebrates 100% Alcohol Compliance on Homecoming Weekend

  The Benton County Above the Influence Coalition and the Benton County Sheriff’s Department collaborated to complete alcohol compliance checks in Benton County on September 21, 2012 as part of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) project funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Benton County businesses had a 100% compliance rate, a respectable rate for any time of year, but particularly during Vinton-Shellsburg and Benton Community Homecoming weeks.

First grade students celebrate 'wedding' of Q and U

Cupakes were part of the QU weddiing celebration at TIilfordl. Quickly and quietly, Q and U became one on Thursday morning, when the students of first grade classes 1N, 1MV and 1V celebrated the “wedding” of the two letters. The students had been studying the two letters for the past week, and ended with what has become an annual tradition at Tilford Elementary. “This is way too much fun,” said one mother.

Vinton Women's Club learns about Community Youth Garden at fall banquet

Eileen Loan tells VWC members how children choose what to plant at the Community Youth Garden.   More than 40 women, along with three men, and later four teenage boys, gathered at the Trinity Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall for the annual fall meeting. The ratio of females to males is highly unusual for the Vinton Women’s Club (VWC) – usually the men number just one or two. I was one of those three men, along with Keith and Bill Ervin, the husband and son of VWC President Kathie Ervin.
