Recalling May 2012

The Pedal 4 Progress project among VSHS students helped send many bikes overseas in May. May Several Vinton-Shellsburg High School students gathered bicycles as part of the international Pedals 4 Progress program. Vinton-Shellsburg alum and former UNI Panther Jim Womochil returned to Vinton to become a teacher and the Viking head football coach. Garrison donors and volunteers made possible a new playground, as that city continues to recover from the effects of the 2011 storm.

Remembering 2012: March and April

Celebrating 100 years: Girl Scouts Erin Wessling Barnett, Maggie Karr Mangold and Carrie Frede. March 2012 was the 75th anniversary of the East Central Iowa REC. Throughout the year, Vinton Today published stories of people who remembered the changes that the REC brought to their lives. In March, we spoke to Lula Perkov, who shared her story about life before and after electricity. Vinton area Girl Scouts also celebrated a national milestone -- the 100th year of the Girl Scouts of America.

Remembering Y2KXII: The biggest stories of Vinton from Jan.-Feb. 2012

Olivia Spencer was a leader at area events in 2012, including the UNI Dance Marathon. Political changes were among the first, biggest and last, stories of 2012 in Benton County. 2012 began with Chris Bendull and Tami Stark joining the Vinton City Council. The sudden death in late 2011 of Shellsburg Mayor-Elect Joyce Pence forced city leaders there to begin the year by looking for a replacement. Danny Roehr won a special election in March of 2012, by a one-vote margin over Shadoe Vogt, who was nearly elected by write-in votes.

Supervisors Vermedahl, Buch leave office after 12 years

Ron Buch's last day in office included signing of some of the final minutes of 2012. Benton County Supervisors Dave Vermedahl and Ron Buch participated in their final meeting before retirement on Thursday, then met with well-wishers at a reception in the courthouse. Vermedahl, a former Vinton city council member and Mayor, was first elected supervisor in District 2 in 2000. Buch, a Luzerne-area farmer, was elected in District 3 that same year.

Open house to honor retiring supervisors Vermedahl, Buch Today

Benton County Supervisors Dave Vermedahl and Ron Buch were first elected to office together in 2000. Today, they will participate in their final meeting before retiring. A reception for Vermedahl and Buch will take place from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27. The two will participate in a brief meeting at 1:45 p.m. in the supervisors' chambers; the last meeting of 2012, as well as the last of their careers.

Koopman light display continues tradition, and shows changes in American culture

Before Scooby Doo filled American homes with his peculiar words and howls, Vinton residents saw and heard the lighted displays at the Larry Kersten farm northwest of Vinton. Before Winnie the Pooh, and Tigger too, made it to TV, Kersten was turning heads each holiday season, and more and more residents came from greater distances to see how his display grew year-to-year.

Christmas in Vinton: Snow adds holiday touch to area displays

Those who were hoping for a White Christmas in the Vinton area had their wish granted last week, when up to a foot of snow came down. The white added to the holiday aura, especially on houses and yards decorated with Christmas lights and displays.
