Library holiday hours

The Vinton Public Library will be closed from Saturday, December 22 through Tuesday, Christmas Day, the 25th. The Library will reopen on Wednesday, December 26th. The week of New Years, the Library will close at 5 pm Monday, the 31st, through Tuesday, January 1st.

Benton County Community Foundation seeks grant applications

  The Benton County Community Foundation (BCCF), an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, is announcing a new funding cycle for grants to be awarded in 2013. The application deadline for all 2013 grants will be midnight (CST) on Mar. 15, 2013, with grant awards to be announced in June. Community Foundation grants can be awarded to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and governmental entities.

Vinton Police respond to public concerns surrounding rumors of a school threat

 The Vinton Police Department and the Vinton-Shellsburg High School have received several calls today from concerned parents regarding a rumor circulating within the High School about a possible school threat. Vinton Police were contacted by Vinton-Shellsburg High School officials at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 17, 2012, regarding information circulating among students about a possible  threat to school safety, rumored to take place on Friday, December 21st.

  Vinton Police:  Get vehicles off Streets and City Parking lots with impending snowfall   With the forecast of up to 5-8 inches or more of snow possible in the next 24-36 hours, it's again that time of year when Vinton Police are reminding everyone about getting their vehicles and trailers off all public right-of-ways and public parking lots, and to keep them off until the snowfall has stopped and Street Department plows have been through your area.

Kiwanis members invite Santa to share gifts with Tilford Elementary students

Young children hugged Santa, rang his hand bell, posed for photos with him and even tried to take his picture during the annual Kiwanis Christmas dinner Tuesday at The Pizza Ranch.  More than 20 students from Tilford enjoyed lunch with the Kiwanis before Santa arrived with a gift for each. The children then assembled Transformers, learned how to drive a radio-controlled truck, cuddled with dolls,invited Kiwanis members to kiss their stuffed animals and played with the toys they had received.

Owner of Cafe 218 site says 'No more truck parking'

No Parking: The owner of the former Cafe 218 site wants drivers to keep their trucks off this lot.   Owner's of the old Hwy 218 Café in Vinton are asking for the assistance of the Vinton Police Department, and the public in getting the word out about trucks parking there.   "We've been contacted by the owners of this property about problems they're having with trucks driving through and parking on the property.

US Bancorp gifted $2,500 to Vinton Shellsburg Community School District

Presenting the $2,500 check to instructor Louise Fleming is Market President Jon Kremer. About 2 years ago, the Vinton-Shellsburg Agriculture Education department started their first fish tanks. Today, they have about 24 ornamental fish tanks and five production fish tanks spread throughout the greenhouse, classroom and high school offices.  Their next steps are to add the creation of aquaponic beds to their production aquaculture and a salt-water tank to the ornamental side of the fish world.

Angel Tree gift distribution takes place Tuesday, Wednesday
