Car fire south of Urbana leads to marijuana arrest Monday night

Cory Kintzel: Arrested on drug charges after car fire. On December 17, 2012 at approximately 21:46 hours, Benton County Sheriff’s office received a report of a car fire in the 6100 Block of 32nd Ave, Benton County. Deputies located the accident scene and noted the vehicle was fully engulfed. Vinton Police Department located the owner/driver at 1009, 1st Ave in Vinton. The driver was identified as Cory Lee Kintzel age 37 from Vinton.

Farmers feed the world: FFA to donate to HACAP

  The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA has decided to follow a national program and give back to the local community. The chapter is mimicking the ADM and Monsanto, Invest an Acre program. The program is asking farmers to donate one acre of crop to be sold with proceeds to go to a local food bank. FFA member, Timothy Houtchens, questioned our local coop, and the decision was made to sell the chapter's last acre with the intent of making it a donation to the local HACAP.

'No hostile intent:' Teen cited for firing BB gun in city limits

  A male juvenile has been cited for discharging a BB gun within city limits, after an incident last week. “We had an incident where a group of friends were horsing around after school and a BB gun was jokingly pointed at a car occupied by two people,” said Vinton Police Chief Jeff Tilson. “All present were completely aware it was a BB gun.

Hat Day! Tilford students celebrate milestone for fund-raiser

Already, Tilford Elementary students and staff members have raised more than $3,000 for custodian John Scriven, who is battling cancer. Today's reward for one of the fund-raising goals was Hat Day; several students and teachers wore a variety of hats to school on Monday to celebrate. 

Legion TV raffle winner

Nancy Jones was the winner of the Post 57 Legion TV raffle. Winner of American Legion Post 57 scholarship raffle is Vinton resident Nancy Jones. Each year the Almerican Legion Post 57 awards scholarships to Vinton-Shellsburg students. This year a 46-in HDTV was raffled to raise the money for the scholarships. The drawing was held Friday evening at the monthly fish fry at Post 57 with Auxiliary Junior Member Bailey Lyons drawing the winning entry.

A day for an 'extra hug:' VS educators prepare for school shooting questions

Vinton-Shellsburg educators began their week by receiving a message from their boss telling them that perhaps today, there may need students in their classrooms who need an extra hug or pat on the back. Monday morning seemed mostly normal at Vinton-Shellsburg schools. More parents than last week dropped off their children at Tilford Elementary – but that was more likely a result in the colder weather than the news from the Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut, where a man shot 20 students and six teachers to death on Friday.

Dollars for Scholars nets $4,000 in roping fundraiser

The Vinton Area Dollars for Scholars as successfully completed their annual roping project.  Local businesses and individuals order fresh roping and wreaths that were put up or delivered on November 10th  with the help of Schoonover Tuckpointing, USA Communications, Vinton/Shellsburg FFA, Vinton/Shellsburg NHS, Ameri-Corp, and many other volunteers.

Some of you may remember last year when Vinton Unlimited participated in helping to coordinate the "Dear Santa" program through 2 Jo's Farm.  Others may remember seeing a flyer go home in your elementary student's Friday folders a few weeks back asking if you could use some help this Christmas season or if you would like to help sponsor a family.

Bake sale raises funds for Tilford janitor

These Tilford students are holding a bake sale this Friday afternoon to help John Scriven. Tilford Elementary students have been looking for ways to help the fund-raising efforts for janitor John Scriven in the past few weeks. This group of girls made cookies for a bake sale that takes place this Friday afternoon at 1311 A Avenue. Area residents are encouraged to stop by and help Mr. Scriven. G & G Christmas: Store, customers donate generously

The south wall of the G & G Auto Parts Store is lined with Christmas presents, all donated by the store and its customers.  "Our customers have given us hundreds of dollars, and the area stores -- Theisen's. Dollar General and Alco -- give us special Christmas discounts," said Scott Geissinger.  The toy drive has taken place each of the past several years, as G & G joins many area businesses, individuals and organizations in making Christmas special for the less fortunate families of the area.
