Dear Santa Program coming to Vinton

Vinton Unlimited is partnering with the Dear Santa Program to provide essentials for families in need this Christmas season. You will find two flyers along in a PDF format that you can download and hang up or pass along. The first flyer is geared toward those who may need a little extra help this Winter to provide for their family. Your kids are invited to write a letter to Santa and drop it off during the Holiday Open House THIS WEEKEND on November 20th.

Would you like to start a business in Vinton?

Tonight, November 15th, Vinton Unlimited is partnering with SCORE to do an introduction about Starting Your Own Business in Vinton, Iowa. This short 2.5 hour seminar will cover the basic things you need to think about when contemplating whether to start a business and what steps you should take to make your dream become reality. The FREE seminar is open to anyone from high school to retirement age.

School board acts on student discipline issue, hears update on Alternative HS

       The Vinton-Shellsburg School Board was called to order at 6:30 with five members present (Wiley, Bird, Gates, Rickels and Bartz).  Hazen arrived at 6:41 and Wiley left at 8:40.  The board moved into closed session as allowed to discuss a student discipline issue.  After the board met, they moved back into open session.

One of Vinton's newest artists: Jeanne Mann's hand-painted items now for sale

A serving tray painted by Jeanne Mann, available at Clingman Pharmacy.         In 2003, Jeanne Mann went to an auction, and came home with a new hobby.      "I bought a cracker jar painted by Sally Ollinger at a benefit auction for the Vinton Palace," recalls Jeanne.      She was impressed by the unique beauty of that hand-painted item, and thought it might be fun to try it herself, even though she had never painted in her life.

In case it snows AGAIN this winter...

  We had a little scare last week with our first measurable snow of the season. Fortunately it did not impact travel or create a late start.  But, the winter season is upon us and we're bound to have storms that interfere with school. Please be sure to discuss with your students what they are to do if we have a late start or early out.

Izaak Walton League donates wreath to Virginia Gay Hospital

Izaak Walton League spreads Christmas cheer to  Virginia Gay Hospital   The Izaak Walton League, Vinton Chapter, has again donated a beautifully decorated, large wreath to Virginia Gay Hospital which will be displayed throughout the Christmas Season.  The “Ikes” have been making wreaths for 15 years and for most of that time have generously donated one or more to the VGH Hospital and Clinics.

Friend of Gloria Stout remembers life that ended in '89 gas station robbery

The gravestone for Gloria and Gerald Stout, at Raetz Cemetery near Atkins.        Gloria Stout was very familiar with Highway 30, driving that road to work for decades as it led east from the Newhall corner to Cedar Rapids, and west toward the Keystone corner.      Highway 30 took her to work for decades -- first to the Square D factory, then later to the Pemco Fastbreak gas station, where she was the assistant manager.

GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul to visit Vinton Friday

            Ron Paul, a Texas Congressman and Republican candidate for president, will bring his campaign to Vinton this Friday. He will meet with voters at 1 p.m. at The Pizza Ranch. The public is invited.

Murder history: 1981 suspect in Vinton son's death died in 2010 in Minnesota

       The only person ever charged with committing murder in Vinton died last year in central Minnesota.      The case of Judith Eisenbacher Burkart, who later remarried and became Judith Jeppesen, kept the attention of law enforcement authorities in two states for several months in 1980 and 1981.      It began in a garage on West 17th Street in the middle of the night in the summer of 1980.
