Scariest Playground: Garrison project earns $500 donation

Scariest Playground: Garrison Park Project earns $500 for third place in contest.          Being scary is a good thing, this time of the year.      Kaboom.org, a national nonprofit organization that helps to create playgrounds, recently held a "scariest playgrounds" in America contest. The old and wind-damaged Garrison park was the third place winner, says Mandy Fisher, who has helped lead the fund-raising for new playground equipment.

ASAC returns to storm-damaged office, thanks Vinton Family Medical Clinic

The ASAC staff is returning to this building, which lost its roof July 11.      The roof of the building that houses the Benton County ASAC (Area Substance Abuse Council) offices was reduced to damaged rafters and the offices were soaked with rain during the history July 11 storm. After salvaging their equipment, the staff needed a temporary home while waiting for repairs. They found that home at the Virginia Gay Hospital's Vinton Family Medical Clinic, just north of the hospital.

Downtown Halloween: Courthouse games and trick-or-treating

Children receive a treat at Viking Sewing.     . The traditional Vinton Parks and Recreation downtown Halloween event took place Saturday, as hundreds of children dressed in creative costumes and played games on the courthouse lawn and went trick-or-treating at downtown stores. There was also a special showing of the movie "Casper"' at the Vinton Palace.

VS FFA wins national Floriculture, Chapter awards at Convention

Silver Award: FFA Floriculture members Abbie Darland, Amy Andrews, Willow Huber and Jacob Patrilla.        Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members Willow Huber, Amy Andrews, Abbie Darland, and Jacob Patrilla were the first VS FFA members to compete in the national Floriculture Event.        "They competed in 10 different areas in the horticulture industry," said FFA Advisor Louise Fleming.        Those areas included: General knowledge, plant ID, problem solving, Face-to-Face selling, handling a customer complaint, potting plant cuttings, corsage making, floral arrangement, job interview, and a team activity.

Annual Tour deLights December 11th

Vinton's Annual Tou deLights will be on Sunday, December 11th, 2011. The Tour deLights supports the Vinton Shellsburg Cross Country teams.  This is a 5k run that will begin at a new location this year, the Fire Station. VGH Nursing & Rehab residents to judge staff department pumpkins

A witchy cat...        Virginia Gay Hospital and Nursing and Rehab are celebrating Halloween with a pumpkin judging contest. Each department created a unique pumpkin and the residents will judge the entries and choose their favorite in several categories on Halloween, Monday, Oct. 31.      The staff and residents also remind area children that trick-or-treaters are welcome this evening!     The pumpkins featured a variety of designs, from Cinderalla to a Jack 'O Lantern fearing being turned into a pie.

VSHS fall concert included community musicians

     The Wesley United Methodist Church Bell Choir accompanied the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Concert Choir during their first number of the Fall Preview Choral Concert Tuesday evening in the VSHS auditorium. Retired VSMS band director Judy Trygstad accompanied the Women's Chorale and Concert Choir with her flute.      The event also included performances by the Chamber Singers, and Alex Springer performing a solo with the Concert Choir  .

US Bank donates $2,500 to Disaster Recovery Coalition

Coalition donation: Greg Walston, Karen Larson & Scott Hansen with Jon Kremer of US Bank.      U.S. Bank in Vinton donated $2,500 to the Benton County Disaster Recovery Coalition. Market President Jon Kremer presented the check to Scott Hansen (Benton County EMA Director) and coalition leaders Greg Walston and Karen Larson.        The Coalition is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to Benton County residents facing the challenges caused by floods, storms and other disasters.
