Vinton Farmers Market Season ends; balloon winners honored

Customers browse among pumpkins and other fresh produce at the last Vinton Farmer's Market of 2001.   The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department Farmer’s market season had its last night on Thursday, September 29th.  Appropriately it was one of the windiest nights in market history with the summer that we have endured this year in Vinton. The VPRD is very thankful for all of the great vendors that participated this season and of course to all of you that came out weekly to support those vendors.

Be Aware of slow moving vehicles

  The Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth wants to remind motorist to be aware of slow moving vehicles as farmers work to harvest the crops.  This time of year there are a lot of farm vehicles moving on Benton County Roads.  Motorists need to slow when encountering these vehicles and use caution when passing any farm vehicle.

VS Football Player Named Homecoming Queen

Homecoming Queen and VS football player Kelly Wagner, with her parents, Cassandra and Ron.      It's a common sight at halftime of a high school Homecoming football game: The King and Queen are introduced. One takes off the helmet that matches the color of those worn by several dozen teammates. The other, who has gotten dressed up for the occasion, comes down from the bleachers. Together they stand in front of the crowd -- and way too many cameras -- and try to keep smiling as countless parents, peers and journalists take a picture.

2012 presidential campaign comes to Vinton; Santorum to speak Monday

    Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, one of the candidates for the Republican nomination for the 2012 presidential race, will be at the Vinton Public Library from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM on Monday, October 3. The public is invited.

Suspended sentence for Lyons in election fraud case

     Former Vinton-Shellsburg School Board President will not face any prison time after pleading guilty to election fraud and perjury of statement.   Lyons was sentenced today in Benton County District Court. He was sentenced to five years and fined $750 plus costs on each count, with the prison sentences suspended. He was also placed on supervised probation for two years.

Homecoming painting tradition continues at VSHS

     Generations of Vinton-Shellsburg High School students have continued the tradition of painting concrete. Before the move to the new building, students painted the streets near the old Washington High School building. Now, with a large parking area all their own, the students paint it each Wednesday evening.       Using a variety of brushes and cans of spray paint, the students painted the parking lot -- and each other -- with a variety of designs, jersey numbers and messages.

Windsor Manor needs your help to step back in time

We serve a population where many suffer from Alzheimer’s and Dementia.  With Alzheimer’s Disease, a person regresses as the disease progresses.  In essence, they travel back through their life.  To help them cope with the changes in their minds, it can help to have items that are familiar to them.  I have put together  a list of items that we are requesting for our residents.

Homecoming royalty to be crowned Thursday evening

      The Vinton-Shellsburg Homecoming Parade takes place Thursday evening. Line-up on B Avenue between 4th Street and 7th Street begins at 5:30; the parade begins at 6. The route leads through downtown Vinton on 4th Street then back to the high school along Second Avenue. The Powder Puff game and pep rally take place at the football field at approximately 7 p.
