Junior Cheerleaders perform at VS game

The VPRD Jr. Cheerleaders learned a variety of cheers.       The annual Vinton Parks and Rec Department/VSHS Cheerleading Jr. Cheerleaders program wrapped up on Friday with the younger cheerleaders performing with the high schoolers during the football game.       The young participants learned a few of the cheers and moves they may one day use when they get to high school.

Farm Safety Day teaches kids how to prevent, treat injuries

Hidden dangers: Farm Safety Day participants list the things wrong in this display.        Approximately 30 Benton County area children learned how to stay safe on the farm at the annual Farm Safety Day led by the Iowa State University Extension and its partner sponsors.     Children learned how to prevent accidents involving machinery, tractors, mowers and chemicals at a variety of stations. At other stations, they learned the correct way to dial 911 and how to provide emergency first aid if an accident does occur.

VSHS students receive academic awards for 2010-2011 year

Constitution Day: VSHS students discuss document with U.S. Marines

Marines speak to Mrs. Steffen's social studies class about the U.S. Constitution.        Vinton-Shellsburg High School students learned on Thursday that the soldiers who defend their constitutional rights give up some of those rights -- particularly the right of freedom of speech -- when they take the oath to serve our country and "defend the Constitution from all known enemies."      Three U.

VS voters returned incumbents to office; supported Kirkwood bond issue

        In Tuesday's school elections, a total of  only 766 people voted in Benton County, which includes Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton Community and Belle Plaine.       All of the VS candidates were running unopposed and easily won re-election. Brenda Bartz, Tim Bird. Angela Hazen and Megan Rickels will serve a four-year term.

Artist Lindsey Renken plans to become art teacher at new Vinton studio

Lindsey Renken has three of her art projects on display now at US Bank.      You walk into the U.S. Bank lobby and see a large wooden lounge chair that you've never seen before. You stop for a closer look.      Then you see a painting and a framed charcoal drawing, all made by the same artist whose name is on a small sign behind the chair.      "Go ahead," says a bank employee.

Fall 2011 Branching Out grant recipients announced

  Fall 2011 Branching Out grant recipients announced Alliant Energy and Trees Forever support 31 tree-planting projects in Iowa   CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – September 15, 2011 – Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, and Trees Forever announced the spring 2011 Branching Out grant recipients.

Garrison Betterment Committee Receives Grant from Pioneer Hi-Bred

  Garrison Betterment Committee is pleased to announce that Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, donated $5,000 towardGarrison fire station equipment for the Garrison area.  This grant originated with a request from Tom Husnik, Pioneer account manager, through Pioneer Community Investment. The grant will be used to help replace firefighter and first respose equipment that was lost during a damaging wind storm that destroyed the Garrison Fire Department building and equipment stored within the building.
