Classes begin for Kindergarten students

Shellsburg Kindergarten students form a circle in Kelsey Blattler's class on Monday morning.      Today was the first day of school for dozens of Vinton-Shellsburg Kindergarten students. Parents had the option of sending them to school in Vinton either Monday or Tuesday before daily classes begin on Wednesday.     Shellsburg's two Kindergarten classes were filled on Monday morning, as teachers Kelsey Blattler and Jodi Hacker helped the students with coloring and reading assignments.

Vinton Wife ties for 3rd place, in Ladies' Husband Calling contest

  Bonnie Swalwell-Eilert of Newton earned first place in the Ladies' Husband Calling contest judged Friday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. First Time Exhibitors Shine in Vegetable Contest at State Fair

  New entrants competed in the First Year Exhibitor division of the Vegetable Crops contest judged Tuesday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. First place went to Jacob Van Manen of Kellogg. Lyndall Larson of New Market took second while Marlene Mogle of Des Moines took third. Fourth place was awarded to Dakota Rundlett of Vinton. A. Jay Winter of Dallas Center took fifth, and Rose Shira of Des Moines placed sixth.

Ribbons Awarded for Fantastic Farm Crops & Jumbo Produce at Iowa State Fair

  Farm crops took to the judging table in the John Deere Agriculture Building sponsored by Alliant Energy on Thursday, August 11, at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.   Ornamental Corn 2) Dwight Sanders, Vinton   Jumbo Produce Wins Big in State Fair Competition The biggest, longest, fattest and heaviest competed in the Jumbo Tomato, Jumbo Apple and Jumbo Exhibits divisions of the Vegetable Crops contest judged Tuesday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.

Records Fall at State Fair Sale of Champions; Schminke's ewe nets $14K

  With a final swing of the gavel, the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) raised $286,300 for the 14 exhibitors of 4-H and FFA Grand Champions in the Sale of Champions Saturday, August 20, at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Two champion records were broken during the Sale. The Reserve Champion 4-H Market Heifer sold for a record $28,000, besting the previous mark of $20,000 set in 2008.

Vinton Boy Scouts paddle for adventure

  Boy Scout Troop 47 of Vinton has a very active outdoor program.  We have an overnight campout every month of the year and we go on a week-long "high adventure" each July.  For this years high adventure, we returned to one of our favorite places: the Boundary Waters Canoe Access Wilderness.  The BWCAW is part of the Superior National Forest which sits along the Minnesota - Ontario border.

One week to Boomtown & Boomfest; final preparations continue

     The little white lines painted on Fourth Street in downtown Vinton are there to mark the spots where the booths will be set up for Boomfest next weekend, when the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association and Vinton Unlimited hold their annual Boomtown and Boomfest events.       See more information HERE, at the Boomtown web site.

Despite storm, Garrison group nearing park project fund-raising goal

Joe Craig, INS, & Byran Kimm, Keystone Comm. present checks to Mandy Fisher and Carol Schellhase.        Garrison residents and the organizers of the effort to raise funds for new playground equipment are not letting the damage from the July 11 storm stand in the way of their progress.      Mandy Fisher, of the Garrison Betterment Committee Park Fund and Carol Schellhase of Keystone Communications Board, received donations of $1,500 on Friday morning, increasing its total funds to $16,300, more than 80 percent of its $20,000 goal.
