Class of 2011: First to attend all four years at new VSHS

In 2005, Wyatt Oltrogge (right) and others from the Class of 2011 broke ground for new high school.      Since the fall of 2007, when the Vinton-Shellsburg High School opened, it began a string of "firsts."      The first day of school. The first athletic event in the gym. The first concert in the auditorium. The first graduation.     May 29 will mark perhaps the last of the "firsts"  for the 4-year-old high school.

HSAP students perform 'Jungle Book'

Massua (Maree Bean) welcomes home her son Mowgli (Nathan Franck) in the HSAP 'Jungle Book.'      The Vinton-Shellsburg Home School Assistance Program students peformed "Jungle Book," based on Rudyard Kipling's work, this past Friday evening and Sunday afternoon in the Tilford auditorium    In "Jungle Book," a young boy, Mowgli, finds himself alone in the jungle, where the animals help to raise him.

Health insurance costs remain steady for Vinton city employees

         When the Vinton City Council planned its budget for this fiscal year, they figured on a 15 percent increase for the health care premiums for city employees. Instead, the council learned during its meeting last week that because the number of claims among employees and family members has stayed low, there will be virtually no increase in the premium for this year.

Osteoporosis discussion continues

Monica Stark discussed osteoporosis for a few hours on Saturday at Fareway.       Continuing the discussion on osteporosis, Virginia Gay Hospital Imaging Services Director Monica Stark spent a few hours on Saturday at Fareway, where she shared information about the bone-deteriorating disease and how to prevent it as we age. Stark spoke to dozens of people and gave them information about bone health and how diet and exercise can help maintain bone density.

'State Fair' at Tilford includes fourth grade projects, activities

Many enjoyed pony cart rides during 4th grade State Fair day at Tilford on Friday.      One of the things that Tilford Elementary students look forward to in their final days as students their is the annual Fourth Grade State Fair event. The students study the diffences in the 50 states, and each does a project based on what he or she has learned about a specific state.      The students sent letters to leaders and others in those states, asking for information.

Cabaret features band, choir, dance and speech routines

Alex Springer performed his mime routine 'Jekyll and Hyde' again.      Some VSHS freshmen and other first-time performers took to the stage along with seniors and others with many years of experience during the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Cabaret Saturday evening in the high school auditorium.     The concert band, jazz band, many choirs and small groups performed a variety of musical numbers.

Under Construction by Haley Bird      While the musicians, singers, dancers and speech performers were in the auditorium sharing their talents during the annual Vinton-Shellsburg High School Cabaret event, the work of the art students was on display in the school cafeteria.     Art teachers Ann Diedrichsen and Chris Juhl and the students arranged the art work so that items of similar style and color appeared together.

V-S Alumni football organizers hope to make first game a huge community event

Joey Seidel ('10) runs the ball during practice for the V-S Alumni team.      Some of them showed up for practice Sunday evening wearing the Vinton-Shellsburg t-shirts they wore just a year or two ago as high school players.      Others arrived in knee braces and baseball caps covering hair not nearly as dark as it was when they first wore the Viking football uniform, back when Ronald Reagan was President.

AmeriCorps Week: A time to discover the possibilities of service to others

          AmeriCorps is celebrating community service through a number of free events during AmeriCorps Week 2011.
