Lutheran Home Volunteer Appreciation Tea

Kim Emrich, LH Admin. presented Evelyn Roths with a 35 year pin, who joined the Auxilary in 1976.   Barely a day goes by here in the Vinton Lutheran Home & Assisted Living Apartments without a volunteer brightening the lives of our residents. Whether it’s the weekly TLCU Sing-A-Long, assisting with Chapel Services or helping with the Ice Cream Social, many family members and people from surrounding towns & churches give their time generously throughout the year.

American White Pelicans gather north of Vinton

A few photos of pelicans north of Vinton...    A flock of American White Pelicans was seen just north of the Cedar River bridge on Tuesday. Many area residents have been watching the birds for the past several weeks, in waterways througout the area. While many people think of pelicans as warm-climate birds, conservationists have been observing them in Iowa for many years. 

Florida corn snake surprises Vinton woman

A corn snake apparently from Florida made the journey to Vinton in the back of a vehicle.     At times, a grocery store carry-out worker gets a request that is not exactly part of his or her written job description. Such an incident happened Tuesday morning at Fareway, where a customer who had recently returned from Fareway opened her vehicle in the parking lot to discover that a corn snake had apparently caught a ride in Florida.

11 Year old requests gifts for the local animal shelter

11 year old Cameron celebrated his birthday with gifts for the Animal Shelter.   Cameron celebrated his 11th birthday by asking his friends to bring presents for the shelter animals.    Here is a picture of Cameron with the presents that his guests brought for the shelter.    Shelter representative Jennings is seen in a party hat.

School Board hears request to add boys soccer at VSHS

       Vinton-Shellsburg School Board member Todd Wiley said he recently spoke to a man who knew one thing about Vinton-Shellsburg: The school does not have boys soccer.      Two soccer enthusiasts from Vinton-Shellsburg High School are asking the school board to change that.      Jake Milroy and John Levis wore soccer shirts to the school board meeting Monday, where they discussed the cost of adding boys soccer to the VSHS athletic program.

Jazz Band in DM; performs today

Will Hancock plays his drum solo during the Jazz Band pep rally.      The Vinton-Shellsburg Jazz band is now in Des Moines, where they will perform at 10 a.m.tomorrow at the Iowa High School Jazz Championships. This is the schools fifth appearance at the State Championships, and its first back-to-back appearance. Director Karl Smith led the band to last year's event, as well. Saxophone player Nick Gardner will be recognized at the event for his achievement of being accepted into the 2011 Iowa All-State Jazz Band.

Krugs join square dancers from around Iowa at annual convention

Style Show: Margaret and Troy Krug in their squaredancing outfits.      Troy and Margaret Krug of Vinton joined dozens of other couples at the 49th Iowa State Square Dance Convention this past weekend. They have been square dancing for more than 30 years, and are hoping more dancers will join them.       The Krugs are members of the Rapid Eights Square and Round Dance Club in Cedar Rapids.

Meeting set for May 3 for work on Vinton comprehensive plan

       The City of Vinton has started work on a new comprehensive plan. The process, designated 2020 Vision for Vinton, will culminate in a document containing policies and goals to guide the city’s long-term growth.      Vinton city officials have retained the services of the East Central Iowa Council of Governments (ECICOG) to help a citizens’ planning committee draft the 10-year comprehensive plan.

Kindergarten students sing at Tilford

Many in the audience captured the Kindergarten concert with their cameras, or phones.     The annual Kindergarten music program, part of the series of concerts at Tilford Elementary, took place Thursday evening.      Music teacher Connie Zenk played the keyboard and directed the children as they sang songs including "Hurray, I like it here" and "I like being little alot."     After the concert, parents and children enjoyed ice cream courtesy of the Tilford PTO.
