School board hires new VSHS principal, teachers

       Vinton-Shellburg School Board member Tim Bird said he was listening to a discussion this week on WMT-Radio about the controversy over the previous high school principal when callers kept praising the current principal and saying how lucky Vinton-Shellsburg was to have him.     School Board member Todd Wiley said his contacts in that area said the same thing.

Utility moratorium on disconnections in Iowa ends for this heating season

Four VSHS students selected for Iowa Legion Auxiliary Girls State

Vinton Girls State nominees Stephanie Lash & Mackenzie Stueck with Raela Uthoff, Post 57 Auxiliary.      For weeks, four Vinton-Shellsburg moms had to keep a secret. Then one day, four girls were called to the high school office between classes. There, they met their parents and Legion Auxiliary members Kay Bonesteel of Shellsburg and Raela Uthoff of Vinton. The four girls -- Mackenzie Stueck, Elle Osborne, Stephanie Lash and Victoria Kramer -- were chosen to represent Vinton and Shellsburg at the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State event in Ames this summer.

Former Vinton coach Gary Stamp fighting cancer

Gary Stamp, in a familiar place....        A few months after a celebratory story featuring an athlete whose career began in Vinton, the Mount Vernon school district is rallying around an ailing coach whose career began in Vinton.     Mount Vernon softball coach Gary Stamp has been diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer, although he's not a smoker.

New legislative map: New House District 75 is virtually the same as old 39th

Old area, new number: No big changes for House district that includes Vinton in proposed map.      While much of Iowa will see changes in its legislative map, the Iowa House District that includes Vinton will be virtually the same. Only the number will change.      Every 10 years, after the U.S. Census, state legislatures are required to redraw their congressional and legislative maps. The congressional map will now include four districts due to faster population growth in other states.

Music, parade and ceremony declare: Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans

VSHS teams earn academic awards

       During each activity season in Iowa, high school students are not only recognized for their accomplishments as performers or as athletes, but also recognized for their efforts in the classroom. The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District is proud of the efforts our students put forth in the classroom. During the winter 2010-11 activity season, the following teams or groups have achieved state-wide academic recognition for their efforts.

VS Board to act on new principal during Friday meeting

       Exactly one month after meeting to "reluctantly" accept the resignation of High School Principal Kirk Johnson, the Vinton-Shellsburg School Board will meet to hire his replacement.     The board is expected to give its official approval to hiring Matt Kingsbury, who is currently the principal at Durant High School.

Local Facebook Account being hacked right now...

Today we received notice that a local gal's Facebook account is being hacked to ask her friends for money.  (Initial's B.J.) She's supposedly stranded in London after being mugged at gun point. The person will direct you to send money to an address in London or will direct you to send it Western Union...but DON'T DO IT!!!! This is not true, she's at work and frantic to stop this scamming! If you get a note like this, ask some questions.
